I don't feel confident using heat around the engine so ended up drilling out the old plug which had rounded off almost immediately I showed it the Allen key. I started with a 6mm drill, stepping up to 8mm. The tap drill size for 1/8 NPT is 8.5mm so some care is needed here. The remainder of the plug then came out easily with an Eazi-Out, after which I cleaned up the thread with a 1/8 NPT-27 tap. I removed the Reed Valve Chamber cover in order to clean up after the drilling but damaged the gasket in the process (and there don't appear to be any replacements available in the UK) so I'm going to have to make one.

By the way, my old vent line was clean as a whistle, maybe because the car is kept in a dry, warm garage?

Following Planenut's lead I used the following components:



I decided to use a stainless blanking plug just in case I ever need to remove it.



Although, an alloy (aka cheese) one would obviously do the job.



I'm using a clear, thick-walled vent tube so that I can keep an eye on what's going on.



You'll need a couple 13-15mm hose clips too.

For what it's worth, the original plug and hose connectors came out of mine quite easily.

I think you may have been very lucky Cuna2016. The alloy blanking plugs seem to have a sealant on them and reluctant to move. A bit of gentle heat may help removal?

Funny I pulled my vent line off and oil came pouring out. Seems like I need to move my vent line. Also probably pick up when of Emil's oil tanks.

Emils tank is indeed a beautifully made item. However If I was to change the tank I would be inclined to fit one of the traditional vertical tanks with the baffles and oil spinners all designed to remove as much air from the return oil as possible. Probably have to redesign the mounting bracket to get it as low as possible but there is plenty of height under the bonnet to fit one in.

I presume this is something that can be done insitu with the oil in (barring a few drips) at a cold engine oil level? I may do this today as a bit of preventative maintenance.

Actually, since I see Obie here, the other bit of preventative maintenance I wanted to do is grease/spray my centa rollers in case it helps prolong life (something Phil hinted might be the case. I’d need to drill a small hole at the base of the centa housing (current inspection hole is at the wrong side). I believe you’ve made such a hole? Can you confirm it’s aluminium? Should be an easy job if so...

The intermediate bell housing which contains the Centa is aluminium, and very easy to machine. When I did the Bleazey conversion I cut the large rectangular hole by hand and was much easier than I expected.

I'll look at pictures and drawings to find the sweet spot and maybe even angle to aim towards the rubbers. I think there's a good couple of inches of clearance between the housing and shaft so should be safe there. Think I'll use a stepped drill bit so I'll at least be able to see a little bit before going wider and notice if I hit something further in (as opposed to a circular hole cutter)

As Rog says its easy to do, I used a hole saw on an arbour. The aluminium is quite thick and you just need to get the hole in the right place.
I have since gone to the full Phil Bleasey Centa modification, something you'll probably end up doing at some point!
