My son just had this mailed to him from a mate who lives on Sicily. Looks nice but I'm not sure I'd like to be so close.
Cheers
John

I remember cruising past the port of Riposto at the base of Etna whilst it was erupting one July evening in 2001. Apologies for poor picture.

Some time later we pulled into the marina there and were horrified at the amount of black dust and grit on the streets and footpaths of this coastal town and adjacent Giarre. Later still we took the narrow gauge railway that runs inland around the base of Etna. The view towards the volcano was akin to a desolate lunar landscape for much of the journey, formed by the solidified lava flows.

Cracking photo John.

The narrow gauge featured on a recent rail programme Richard: Worlds Most Scenic Railways, or some such. Not a bad series. smile

Cracking photos. I am due there in the +8 in late May, then on to Malta. A tour we had planned last year and one I think which will be postponed again

In 2018 I went with our cycling club to ride up Etna and the surrounding area. We managed to arrive just as Storm Luigi (maybe not Luigi but you know what I mean) did which rained us out for most of the days. We managed to get half way up Etna on the bikes when heavy rain and hail began to fall, in the distance Etna was smouldering and laying a long trail of smoke across the sky as if to say “go on, let’s see what you’re made of”. We weren’t made of much that day it seemed and turned around heading for the hotel where we drank them out of beer.
I love Scicily and would be tempted to make a long road trip there in the Morgan were it not for the immense potholes and broken roads that typify the southern part. On one of our excursions we took a wrong turn and ended up at the end of a dual carriageway. The road ended abruptly going nowhere other than over a precipice where, we assumed, a bridge should be. No signs or warnings just concrete blocks stretched randomly across the road. It pays to have local knowledge.

The area to the north of Sicily is riddled with volcanic islands including Stromboli. Nearest and only a short distance from Sicily is the island of err, Vulcano off the north east coast. The track around the rim of this benign but sizzling volcano gives stunning views although you need to keep moving or the soles of your shoes melt!

Islands in the background to the north are Lipari then Salina. We anchored initially off the east side and swam around to find the warmest of the geo thermally heated waters shades
