I am relatively new to Morgan ownership having bought a 2006 4/4 two years ago and until recently I have not experienced any problems however I have now developed a fuel gauge problem.

On switching on the ignition the needle swings to full and stays there irrespective of the amount of fuel in the tank. I have assumed that there is either an electrical fault or the sender float is stuck in the full position so thought it would be a simple job to remove the sender unit from the tank to check. However on inspection the tank top is so close to the transverse wooden frame I would need to remove the tank in order to remove the sensor something I don't want to attempt. The roads around me are pretty bad and I had hoped that if it was stuck the shaking would free the float if stuck but no such luck. I have done a search on this site and see that most people seem to have had problems with the gauge accuracy something I didn't experience mine worked fine, I know I can rely on keeping a check on my mileage but would like everything working.

My question is are there any electrical checks (simple explanation please) I can do that may give a indication if the fault is with the sender unit or in the guage?

Thanks

James

James, check the earth connections to the tank. Gauge usually goes to full as yours has when an earth connection fails.
Good luck with checking for it smile

The earth goes to ground at the right (driver0 hand rear side of the chassis.

I have checked the tank and there is no evidence of any earthing wire having been fitted. I did try earthing with some jump leads to the chassis but no change!

2006 was a change year. The issue maybe with the 4 way plug or connection to both fuel pump and sender (blue wire) therefore. Maybe remove and check connections if possible. This connection includes its own wired ground so there won't be another. There is a comment on wiring schematic to connect cable screen to ground but likely this is for electrical noise suppression.
