Went into Morgan today to see about some paint touching up. As is usual Mr Baldwin looked after us impeccably and I left a happy man. Who would have thought I would have been on the phone to him again ten minutes later. Filled up at the nearest garage and the M3W spluttered and didn't really comeback to life. A call to Morgan and Mr Baldwin said have you filled it right to the top to which I said yes. That's the problem you should stop after the petrol pump clicks off I was told. Don't ever put anymore in. After a few more minutes it did struggle back to life and he advised just to rev it for a few minutes and proceed slowly. Sure enough as advised it would be fine and it was. As I say you learn something everyday and not a mistake I will make again!
Anybody else made this mistake?

Basically true but given I've managed on occasion to get the first click and then get another twenty litres into the tanks, it's not the whole story. Depends a lot on the sensitivity of the pump cut off and the rate of flow; a fast pump seems to flow a lot faster than the balance pipe between the two tanks can handle, so a false "full" can happen long before the left hand side tank is anywhere near full. Over filling can certainly cause nasty misfires and warning lights as the vapour breather system for the tanks gets filled with liquid petrol. I have of course also had a pretty much instant overflow on filling past the first click!

The trick is to wait after the click to let the tanks balance out and then go on filling till it clicks again. Continue repeating this process till the delay before it clicks is only a couple of seconds and then stop. If you do over fill just open the filler cap to let a bit of air in and you should be able to drive on with no more trouble.

Even my favorite station who was doing well installed a new pump and the one click method went right into the dust bin of good memories. Fill slowly. I even grab the roll hoop and rock the mog side to side gently about half way through the fill.

yes, if you fill and fill and fill all the way to the very top you will basically flood the engine... it will sputter and fart and finally run okay
don't ask how I know

This seems to be an universal issue. I've taken to just filling up mathematically now...miles driven/tank capacity/etc. Good luck!

Being new to the Three Wheeler scene this is completely new to me. On top of it all it said the tank was 20% full and I could only get 13 litres in it . Still saying full now so I will have to record mileages and be careful in future.

Here is a question; if you run the tank dry to see what your gauge is doing then once fuel is put back into the tank, lets say 2 gallons to get an accurate mileage check would there be anything needed to bleed or reset when it runs dry?

If your car has an electric fuel pump module in the fuel tank, I think the issue would be your electric fuel pump running dry- it will fail/melt. I have not had it on the Morgan but I have had it on my ski boat.
On the boat it can happen in seconds caused by running the tank too low and then doing a tight protracted turn causing the limited fuel to slosh to one side of the tank allowing pump to run dry (even though the pump module has a small reservoir).. It is so dodgy the Boat company recommends we never run with less than a quarter filled tank. As with everything Nautical a replacement pump "module "is $600. The small electrical pump that actually fails in the module (once you have identified it) is $40!!!
The fuel pump module (Ford) in my Morgan +4 2006 is remarkably similar in construct to my boat Module.
So bottom line. If you have an electric pump module on your car do NOT run it dry. Regards Ian

Ian, I was hoping that there was a fuel pump shutoff when the system saw zero pressure.
So maybe not?
