Got oil dripping from the front crank pulley, spotted it dripping out of the bottom of the timing belt cover.

1. Can this oil seal be replaced by just removing the crank pulley as I'm swapping the cam belt anyway or does the whole cam carrier plate have to be removed as well?

2. Would Matts Machine Shop be the best place to get a replacement oil seal?

All input greatly received.

Don't know the answer to Q1. But the seal will be a standard imperial size available at any good bearing supplier.

Never had to do one of these but once you have the seal out, measure it ( it will be imperial) and buy a reputable one such as SKF on line - by far the cheapest option. Let us all know the sizes please.

Is it leaking because it's not been run for some time and the sump is full of oil?

I have only replaced this when I was doing the cam change and had the carrier plate off, it was easy to knock out from behind. I would think that it could be replaced without removing the plate as long as you can get the old seal out, there are a number of seal pullers on eBay and I have done some similar seals by drilling the face and using a self tapper screw each side to pull on. There are usually numbers embossed into the seal front face to show the size, or measure as Rog and Phil have said. Or, looking in the parts book it says, "Seal, pinion, dual lip, 22mmx35mmx7mm" p/n 106-0733, even easier wink

Think most things have been covered so, for information, here's some photos of the seal;

and from the inside of the plate;

and the new seal that went in;

Good photos Calum, as usual. Would you happen to have a part number and source for that seal? It does not look like the SKF Seal that came from S&S.

How did it workout? Was your leaking or did you replace it just because you were there?

My one had seeped for almost eight years...but never enough to be worth worrying about.
It's just a twin lip 22-35-7 and from memory is Viton though I stand to be corrected on that. Available from any decent bearing/seal supplier but do note that it is metric despite being in a US made engine.
Don't think the new one is leaking yet but it's probably just a matter of time!
