The one adjustment to make to the figures is the one for age. What matters most isnt deaths but life years lost. If I die at 75 it is way less of a tragedy than if my son dies at 40 or my grandson at 5. And thats one characteristic ov covid that doesnt apply to flu - the people dying are those like me in gods waiting room.

To my mind the great tragedy of covid is not the deaths of us oldies but the life damage / economic damage done to the younger people.

Yep , did say it was not that surprising .... just that it stood out ... the utter disconnect between investment strategies and social value .... just because it's the 'way of the world' doesn't mean it's right or sustainable .... the divestment of fossil fuel investments due to poor optics for their holders should be the writing on the wall for the money men. Much more of that to come in the future across wider sectors.

Still nothing in Wales for the over 60’s. We were doing very well until we ‘ran low’ on vaccine. Supposed to be back up to speed in the coming week......

Wales apparently had extra doses early on as the Barnet Formula showed a higher number of elderly/vulnerable population. Hence more falling into the more needy categories. A slight delay in getting up to speed on giving the jabs but that soon reversed.
The next couple of years will be interesting from Covid management to economic recovery to long term strategic plans ( if any!!).
Getting the domestic part of the economy back is critical. But....what plans are there to pay for the Covid costs? Will we have an extended recoup or will faster measures be implemented? Opportunities to generate tax income have been already announced but there will definitely be more coming.
Austerity is likely to return ( if it has gone?).
That’s my pragmatic view.
Just remembered the statement about recruiting extra HMRC staff. Brace yourselves!

News in the paper this morning that in England the 56 to 60 group will be getting letters this week...
On target for every adult to have been offered vaccination by July.

I would be surprised if that actually was the case since the appointments are run centrally based on NHS data which includes your date of birth.

Anyway, Wales seems to be doing as well as the others after a rocky start. We have just received appointments for the second dose on Tuesday just 4 weeks after the first dose. For some irrational reason I am pleased - irrational because it doesnt entitle me to do anything that I am not doing now and what I am doing now has kept us clear of the disease. Arguably my second dose should go to some young person at risk but I am ot going to refuse it.

Indeed, and maybe they could make a dent in the £34bn in unpaid taxes. It would be almost enough to make up for the £37Bn we've given to Serco and its partners over the last year with no apparent benefit.
