From around 2012 (sorry, I cannot remember exactly when but may have been when the MX5 gearbox was first used), the 4/4 was available as a bespoke build as well as a Sport. Our 2014 4/4 has a proper spare wheel and an easy-up hood. Allon-White have a black example for sale at present.

I have the Ford gearbox, and I know the Mazda has a better shift. But I’m used to mine and find it perfectly ok

I wouldn't mind the shift feel on the Ford box. I had two roadsters with a Ford box and the shifting was very ok. On the contrary, I liked the "clonk" when the gear engaged. However, I find that the ratios on the Mazda box are better matched, especially the first two gears are better suited to the lightweight of the 4/4 because they are longer.

I have seen a few 4/4 Sports advertised. I was unsure about the hood but I do like the Traditional look and from the comments it doesn't seem to be too much of a compromise.
I would really like a galvanised chassis. Didn't realise the MX5 box came in later. would an earlier car, say 2009 with a MT-75 box be okay? I am already experienced with the MX5 box and the Ford Type 9 but not the MT-75. I had my Sport from new in 2009 which was the launch year for the Centenary and the Ford gearbox was a bit notchy for the first 3,000mls but gradually freed up to be a nice smooth action. Fifth is a virtual overdrive tbh. I have no MX5 experience so don't have a comparison. The traditional hood is easy to live with, I've never considered changing to an easy option in my seventeen years of driving once again it's a personal thing.
