Update: I've left the 3W in good hands. Visual inspection confirmed this was a bit of roller. After much deliberation I decided to drive up rather than trailer - I figured worst case scenario would be getting stuck on the side of the road. Fortunately I was able to drive it 2 hours without any issues at 70 mph today, but yes, will have to get the rollers replaced before my trip to CA. Fortunately they had them in stock so I hope to be on the road in <10 days.

Thanks all for the tips!

How many miles were on the rollers?

Under 9k. I don’t lug the engine but I do drive it pretty hard... sort of how one drives around a race track! My mechanic said the only other car he saw with busted rollers was Alex Roy’s, and that was mainly due to his housing not having the bottom weep hole so rust built up inside and probably expedited the wear on the rollers. I might try to ease up my driving a bit, give her a little break. I’ll remind myself not every stoplight means a 0-60 test. I’m hoping my next batch lasts me upwards of 15k

Thank you. I have suspected that driving habits, like smoking the tire, dumping the clutch and speed shifting all lead to early demise of the rollers. There apparently was a bad batch of them but I just pray I got some good ones because I baby the wee beastie. I rev it but don't jamb gear unless an unseen vehicle is bearing down on me.

By any chance are you getting those replaced under warranty?

Unfortunately, it is not necessary to 'drive hard' for the rollers fail. They will all go sooner or later. Thus the beauty of Phil Bleazey's upgrade to allow swapping out the rollers in under an hour rather than many hours/days of workshop time. By the way, your mechanic's verdict on Alex Roy's car got my BS meter twitching!

Agreed Andy, no chance of rust in A Centa Drive Unit, they get highly polished. Is BS as good as Horse S### for the garden ?

Don’t shoot the messenger! I’m guessing one of Alex’s issues was the stop and go NYC driving.

I didn’t inquire about the warranty on the rollers. I will ask and advise.

When I was in Seminary we stated there was Literaturgeschichte, Redaktionsgeschichte, and horsegeschichte

Rust in the Centa makes me think it might have flooded in a hurricane and was not started for a long time afterwards.

The drive shaft in my Centa is showing signs of surface rust, could that be what is being referred to ?
