Hi All,

With the planned release of Lockdown later this year, I've started planning some Tours. They will be our 1st apart from a couple of short trips as we purchased the car just before the 1st Lockdown.

It occurred to me that we will on occasion be leaving the car unattended with the suitcase on the Rack and bags on the rear shelf. Searching this forum solved the Rack security and I have a pair of kanulock straps on order.

I'm after advice on how to secure the contents of the back shelf? If the weather is fine we will have the Roof down and side screens off as much as possible and I'd prefer not to have to put the roof up every time we stop.

My only thought so far is to loop a security cable through the handles of the bags etc but is there somewhere to secure the end to in the car?

All thoughts/advice gratefully received.

I always fit the tonneau cover if I park up when touring. It keeps the sun off the seats and stops sticky fingers poking around in the door pockets.

I asked Allon White to make me a tonneau cover for touring where the zip is side to side just behind the seats. That way, when stopping, all I have to do is to tip the seats forward (otherwise the head rests have to be removed), do up the zip and fix it to the front studs. The cover has a flap that ensures the luggage in the rear compartment is covered so it stops loose items from being blown out.

IIRC, someone on TM has fitted a ring bolt in the tonneau area for a security cable.

I fix a flexible cargonet.

Difficult to explain, but pictures where possible by mail.

By the time all the navigators additional 'stuff' is packed into the parcel shelf area it's so blink'in tight with the seats pushed back you can't extract 'owt anyway

But as Paul mentions a half tonneau keeps it discrete

In over 35 years in my +8 and having toured extensively through Europe, over 100k miles I have never had a problem with bags behind the seat. They have never been touched. I should add I have no roof or sidescreens and just a tonneau cover with central zip. My seats don't recline.

I did loose a suitcase off the back in the late 80s but that was my own silly fault, it wasn't tied down securely enough. Hit a pothole on the Italian Autostrada near Venice, fell off and a Swedish 38 ton truck ran over it. Wasn't much salvageable.

I put a stainless eye bolt thorough the passenger wooden floor. The a stainless cable with soft eyes to go through the case handles.
A word of warning though , if your dealer screws back on the ali plate for the battery & replaces one screw with a long one it can make the plate live if it pierces the high power cable. If your eye bolt touches the chassis cross member and the wire gets close to the plate the car catches fire.
My conclusion is therefore to do this on the drivers side.

I always put the cockpit cover (by John Taylor) over the car.

In addition, I have a fastening eyelet on the shelf behind the seats (screwed through the wood and used to secure the dog, but also suitable for securing luggage).

Valuable items never stay in the car.

I have two Hills alive bags which I cover with a small bolt of material which matches the colour of the carpet. Essentially hides the bags, which are secured using John V6's method.

Probably a waste of time, but stops me worrying about stuff I probably don't need to carry, being nicked

Yes I agree the most you can do is hide your luggage or, possibly put a chain and padlock through all the baggage handles.
On my rack I use a flexible cycle lock through the case handle and rack. Deterrent if nothing else.

I have webbing straps which have a locking clasp - like straps for a windsurfer - I’ll try and remember the make!
