Hello-

I am your newest member, Steve Thornton, from Bowling Green, Kentucky. I recently purchased a 1956 Morgan Plus 4 RHD, with less than 60,000 miles on it. I can’t wait to enjoy this car and get to know it better.

I have been out of the car collecting circuit for a few years, enjoying motorcycles during those years. I have decided to return to the cars and this great car became available in my hometown. I have owned many Triumphs and Jaguars, even a few MG’s. I always admired the rare siting of a Morgan. I look forward to your friendship and help. If this forum is as much help as the Triumph forum has been to me, you will become my good friends very soon. Thanks.

Steve

A 1956 +4 is a rare car these days, but most parts are available if you know where to look.

As long as they get regular maintenence the engine (Triumph TR2?) Gearbox (Moss) and back axle (Salisbury 3HA or possible 7HA Phase 1?) are pretty bombproof. But the weakest of these is definitely the axle.

The suspension , brakes (drums all round unless it has been converted to front discs?) are very similar to that fitted to all trad Morgans, so most parts are pretty easy. As an ex motorcycle man I am sure you will have a good grease gun , make sure you use it regularly on the front suspension. When the wear starts to show in the king pins then budget to replace the old mild steel version with some hard chromed versions and they should outlast the car (as long as they are well greased)

If the body and frame are good , they do not take much care to keep them that way. However if the frame is starting to show signs of wear (rot, movement in the joints etc) then beware as this canoe a big job.

Lastly the chassis, I am sure you will have checked that this is sound , and straight , and should be no trouble to keep it that way. If there are signs of old repairs and bending of the flanges then beware. New chassis are still available , but the time to install one is many many hours of hard work.

Ask any questions you like , there are no stupid ones , but plenty of silly mistakes from not asking them.

I should have added that not so far away from you in Nashville IN there lives one THE Morgan gurus on your side of the pond , Fred Sissons. Although I think his Morgan stable is currently a couple of 3 Wheelers , what he does not know about our cars is not worth knowing.

Welcome to TM Steve ... . Will be great to see some pics and hear your experience with your car (the 'pic' bit seems a major rite of passage for a lot of new members 🙂) ..... your background in old Brit cars will mean the very quirky and 'vintage' qualities of an older Mog won't come as a shock for you ..... you also have a Disco .... it's surprising the number of members who also have the Morgan/Landrover pairing in their garage. Hope you enjoy your car and your time on here.

Welcome. That is a nice car you have there. I have fond memories of visiting the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green before going onto Mammoth Caves. The roads around there are ideal for a Morgan.

I think the Discovery 2 as quoted is what we refer to as a Freelander over here Keith. Certainly applies in Canada. smile
