CME IMPACT: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on March 24th (20:16 UT). The glancing blow sparked a G1-class geomagnetic storm and caused electrical currents to flow through the soil of Norway.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms on March 28-29 when a high-speed stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from long narrow hole, in the Sun's atmosphere.

Graham,

Can we see or feel these phenomena other than the Northern Lights or are they just things that happen without any real influence on us?

They can affect radio (and anything radio related e.g. GPS) and on rare occasions power distribution.
Unlikely for the human body to notice anything.

GEOMAGNETIC UNREST: This week, Earth's polar magnetic field could be disturbed by the arrival of a minor solar wind stream. ETA: April 6th or 7th. The gaseous material is flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere.

Whether it will lead to visual aurora? smile

THE SOLAR WIND IS COMING: A solar wind stream is approaching Earth, due today or tomorrow. The gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft sampled the stream last week; it was blowing 500 km/s. This kind of stream is unlikely to cause a geomagnetic storm.

Might be a minor visual aurora.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field on April 7th, sparking a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. During the storm, a wave of purple auroras rolled across Canada; later they were spotted in Finland, too. The storm is subsiding now as Earth begins to exit the stream.

A bit more than minor then! smile

THE CHANCE OF STORMS JUST DOUBLED: If you think you're safe from geomagnetic storms, think again. A new study just published in the research journal Space Weather finds that powerful storms may be twice as likely as previously thought.

Jeffrey Love of the US Geological Survey, who authored the study, analyzed Earth's strongest geomagnetic storms since the early 1900s. Previous studies looked back only to the 1950s. The extra data led to a surprise:

"A storm as intense as, say, the Québec Blackout of 1989 is predicted to occur, on average, about every four solar cycles. This is twice as often as estimated using only the traditional shorter dataset," says Love. (Full article on Spaceweather.com)

CHANCE OF STORMS: Minor G1-class geomgnetic storms are possible on April 17th when a high-speed stream of solar wind reaches Earth. The gaseous material is flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere.

A SUNSPOT IN TURMOIL: Sunspot AR2814 is in turmoil. The active region has nearly a dozen moon-sized dark cores scattered across a patch of sun 75,000 km wide. These cores are boiling in and out of existence as the sunspot transits the face of the sun.

Sunspots are, essentially, islands of magnetism floating on the surface of the sun. AR2814 is more of an atoll--and a very unstable one. If its magnetic underpinnings continue to shape-shift, opposite polarities could clash, leading to a solar flare. Or not. Only one thing is certain: Tomorrow, AR2814 will probably look different than it did today?
