The windscreen washer tubing under the dash varies, but some cars have a very thin walled black plastic tube which is similar to a cable cover, and very floppy. At each end, to assist holding it in place is a thin ring of the same tube over the top. One of mine was missing.

My tubing has never leaked but watching it, while squirting the screen shows that it spasms quite violently, and could easily detach itself.

This image shows the original black tubes. From the pump to the T piece is a more conventional clear tube. The black leather in the foreground is a cover I added to keep water away from the instruments and circuit board.



This is the original tubing next to the aquarium tubing I sourced from e bay.The size is 3mm. You can see the extra rings at each end on the original tubes.



Here are the new tubes installed. I used the original T piece, although a new one came with the tubing. The original was a firmer fit.



The next image is a better view of the leather apron which covers the back of the instruments and circuit board.



Finally I tested the system and there were no leaks.

My roadster did leak and I did a similar mod. It never leaked after that. I was wondering about offering myself as a consultant to the factory, but I think you'd do it better Dave.

Seems to be a problem with S1 Roadsters - Ah! It’s a Roadster, Sir, they all do that.

The leak deflector is a good idea, as I think the S1 switch panel electronics are NLA

I like the leather protection over the electric's, I had a issue a few months back while driving in the rain , my indicators started flashing (right one first and the left, then both started flashing people on the M1 must have thought I had gone mad, pulled in to the services and dried of the water behind the dash, before setting off again
After talking to Chris Bailey at the NEC the last weekend I have a good idea where the water is coming from (job for over the winter) but will look at fitting a deflector asap

Hi Dave - mine (2004 4/4) has just started leaking. I’ve never accessed the gubbins behind the dash - is that easy to do or do I need the steering wheel off, etc? If you can advise how to gain access I’d be very grateful.

With thin fingers & back ache you can probably do it from underneath removing the rubber under tray if you have it.
It is easier to take off the dash 3 or 4 screws (left right & in centre under the dash roll). Have a camera & towel handy. The towel catches the dash to stop scratches, the camera to take photos as soon as you can see inside as wires can come loose.

First disconnect the power. Put the towel between the wheel boss & dash. Open the doors. Remove screws & lower the wheel gently it should drop out.
I replaced not only the tubing but also the T piece as mine was leaking. Tie wrap the tubes to the spray nozzles.
Then just put it all back together.
