We are entering what will be a momentous change in cars, from ICE to leccy. Inevitably that will lead to a post changeover strong market in so called classic ICE cars of the last interations. At the same time, classic car buffs tend to go for the cars of their youth whicvh is why cars of the 60 to millenium are often worth more than cars of the 30's 40's and certainly of the 1900 to 1920 era .

So if you were going to leave to your offspring a recent or new car which when hoarded by them would be a pretty good investment, what car would it be? Needs to be relaively small production, a bit special or iconic, usually a bit sporty. Bit like you might put down a case of some plonk that you know is going to be worth a forune in 50 years time. And dont say Morgan because few if any of them over the last century have attained any sort of collectors value however much you might love yours.

I have a very poor track record in chosing future classics but my vote would be an Elise, preferably one with competition history. But I am struggling to think of what might be the modern equivalent of the 1970s Ferrari 250 that sold then for 50k and is now in the millions

The early shape Audi TT .... Mrs Image had one until recently .... the 225 bhp model, quattro with the factory lowering/handling pack .... most definitely not a hairdresser's car! .... she fell in love with the Art Deco styling (very un-Audi to let a car out into the wild that wasn't identifiably 'corporate' .... something they rectified with the mk2 that was very 'Audi' in its styling cues)

For the sake of being different and more exclusive possibly one of the V6 versions .... not any faster but less common.

Will never be a car that makes millions .... but definitely a future classic at the E-type level

If past trends are an indicator of the future, then any large engine, well specified, low mileage, low ownership Mercedes 4 seater cabriolet or 2 seater SL have always been in demand. once they get beyond the 20 to 30 years since production ceased. Already the later 80's 107 SL's and excellent examples of the 90's E class 124 4seater cabriolet with sportline are starting to command more money than just 5 years ago.

The one I've got - a DB7 i6 Volante, manual gears.

Based on today's values I'd plump for a fast Ford, Focus RS or Focus/Fiesta ST.

Stick it in bricks and mortar it saves any hassle and they can rent it out, our three do this already on their spare houses as two of them are not petrol heads. No 1 Daughter and husband are about to replace their Vantage with a Tesla these youngsters are not emotional about the ICE and are very aware of their peers socially and in the work place.

The mood is changing very quickly right now against our petrol fed desires and I think there will be no market for them at all in a minute, as Gordon said past performance etc..

I always amortize my Morgan's over four years as they are my fun and owe me nothing as they are always bought with spare cash at the time. There will always be petrol available at a price to feed my passion so I'm not too bothered really.

It is folly to invest in anything that starts to rot away the day you buy it to me, even your beloved Loti have many problems associated with fibreglass let alone ingress and egress.

The Coupe.

Beautiful things will never go out of fashion. Some kind of artificial petrol will be enabled for light aircraft and specialist cars.

You can have a million Ferrari's, Porsche's and Lambo's but there will only ever be a few Aero Coupes.

My great grandad apparently reckoned on the three B's for long term investments, bricks, baccy and booze. Maybe less so one of them now.

Since 2007 I have a petite little Elise, today I still drove 420 km with her, visiting my mother. She has only 60,000 km because she was mothballed for a few years. I think my son will be happy if he is allowed to drive ICE later at all. And the 4/4 stays, everything else is partly already sold, partly advertised. At the moment there is still a market. The future will be more difficult for ICE, no matter how beautiful and how historicaly valuable they are.

If I had the space I'd buy a Jaguar XJ6 Two door coupe. I feel they will become the one to own in 50 year's time.
