Kitum cave? One of the caves in Kenya where elephants seek out salt. 👍The elephant cave at Mt.Elgon, 30km next to Kitale. I have to check if the official name is Kitum. --- edit: Kitum is correct When I was there in the 80's it was only known to locals and to some scientists but not a tourist spot at all. I then was at a project in Kitale and we had to wait days for machines to arrive so someone proposed to use the LandRover to drive to the cave. There were elephant trails with broken trees. We went into the huge cave but had no torch so we did not get in very far. It was quite frightening for me as I was afraid elephants could arrive any time. Animals usually arrive at night time but they told so many wrong stories before so I did not trust the local staff too much. I felt happy wearing my Texas cowboy boots when a big pile of elephant dropping was in my way which I did not see in the dark of the cave. I had no Idea to be at the hot spot of the Marburg virus and the Ebola virus. Maybe it was an advantage not to have a torch at site. It prevented us from spending too much time inside the cave.
