It is often a case of different engines and ecu . I used Millers octane boost additive in my Focus td and it increased mpg. A mate tried it in his golf but no effect. I was saving about £25 per bottle of Millers over the number of doses it gave. Basically Bottle cost about £12-13 and fuel saving about £38.
Thinking about it....was this the VW cheat fix in the ecu mapping type of effect but in reverse?innocent hide

Over here fuel quality varies enormously with some interesting results. During Morgans Over America the European and Antipodean Moggies were filling with 95 Octane and suffering poor performance and engine stuttering issues, once they swapped to 99 Octane which we use the issues went away. I never use Supermarket fuel unless I have no other choice and the preferred is Shell V Power which my 94 +8 tells me is the best. We have winter and summer blends of petrol but the Shell V Power is constant throughout the year. As said above for the difference in price and the amount we use go for the best you know it makes sense.

Bruce,
I have shell providing power & main gas to my house , because they were the best deal. I get 3% off 60 litres (15.8 US gallons). So V power is a fuel of choice early in the months at least. 60 l is roughly 350-400 miles of grins.

Outside the potential economics argument, I use Shell 99 octane. Probably the lowest ethanol content around. Good additives to help keep the fuel system cleaner. Who knows, but it certainly won't do any harm.

Those of us who trusted "Formula Shell" in the '80s might disagree!

For the youngsters and those with short memories, here's a history lesson (somewhat surprisingly from Shell's own website):

Shell FuelSave reminiscent of Formula Shell debacle

Interesting read. I guess Shell have learned from previous issues. Who hasn't had issues in all aspects of life, especially in the world of motoring,, improved and moved on. I will keep this in mind but no issues so far on many classics I own. The Shell garage also happens to be the closest one to my home.😄

It is amazing how a whole team of petrol scientists managed to design a petrol that killed so many engines. Shell Formula Hell would have been an appropriate name at that time.

Kinda like programmers who loose touch with the real world, as per the VW pollution avoidance shenanigans...? Bottom line, It`s all about the MONEY, is it not...?

Bet they won't be doing that again, I bet Boeing won't be either.
