Isn’t there an automatic adjustment mechanism inside the rear brake drum that must be released when reassembling the drum over the shoes?

No, but you can fit a manual brake adjuster to make the job easier in the future! Check out this THREAD.

BTW, thanks for the photo.
Can't be seen in the photo but externally there should be an oval shaped rubber grommet you can remove, then just pop in a small screwdriver and just ping apart the pawl, it's spring loaded to retract and back off the shoes...job done !
