I went from one or two junk mails a week to between twenty and twenty five a day almost overnight. So far they all end up directly in the junk mail folder but even so I find it very annoying.

They're all of he same type offering me discounts, awards, cryptocurrency etc. is there nothing to be done to stop them ?

No not really. Keep your email address as carefully as you can. Once you get on some dodgy spam list that gets sold around that's just the way it is with the wild west Internot. You just have to apply filters and spam software as you can based on what O/S and mail application you use I am afraid.

Some people keep a separate email address (gmail/hotmail) for rubbish subscriptions and a private one that they use for real human to real human life.

In the good old days of physical junk mail, my mate had a good system. Every time he registered or set up an account with a business or company, he would use a different 'middle' initial. He could then identify which company had sold his details on....

If you email has something called a catch-all capability you can do this. Hotmail and GMail do not offer it but any where you have a domain of your own usually do.
A catchall will allow one account to collect all the non standard names (before the @) and drop them into one place.

So I sign up using that same logic.

bbc@mydomainname.com

It also means that if you start getting spam to that address you can tell who has been breached and who caused your next serving. It also means the blast radius of that breach is smaller. It can be handy.

There are a couple of things you can do with a Gmail address. I just found this article which gives a clear description:

I can't even see what purpose some of these spam mails serve.

I have several saying I've had received huge amounts of money into my account (millions). Surely no one would respond to these ?

If they didn't work on the occasional "idiot" then the scammers would stop sending such emails...

The huge amounts of money ones date back to the days of the fax machine. I don't think I ever saw one on a telex but that doesn't mean they didn't exist.

This must be some sort of record. When I logged on this morning I had 4 identical emails, all from different gmail addresses, offering me a way to "shrink my ageing prostate".
Can anyone beat that?

It may not be a scam. I had the real thing (HoLEP) done just 4 days ago. So far so good. LoL.
Cheers
