Must be why I have a love of Jeep Wagoneers. They seem to, without trying, be a 'lifestyle' car and just blend into the landscape. Super cool.

Remember the XLCR?
Rare even when new.

FI - yes, my 1450 Fxxx Heritage Softtail Classic had it. Plus lots of other electronics that didn't make sense on a bike. Anyway, what put me off ever doing it again was the quality of finish and an electrical fault that really should have seen part, if not the whole loom, replaced under warranty. Got to a stage where I didn't want to take it out unless it was dry and going to remain a dry day... Pretty pointless owning it then. The Wing I replaced it with, despite being much older was in better condition (though not without one or two minor problems to sort) and cost less than a third of the HD.

Bee Ems have got too complex for me now - a classic Guzzi California would be nice, but watching the antics of tin top drivers during my commutes morning and evening puts me off returning to PTW, despite being an IAM rider for near 20 years.

Be interested to see the piccies of your Custom as it develops smile

Cheers,

In my twenties I lived just up the road from Duggies and every day passed (or was passed by) a flat rad with no shine anywhere and yet just looked very good. In fact it was peering in to Duggies window one day when I was invited in to sit in a new four seater - dark green- and was hooked, but it was the fascination with that dull, scuffed flat rad that started it. Meabh.

Yes, but when something is 'just right' (you know, does'nt need sparkle or trinkets to make it better)...then it is ...just right.

That's why I, personally, love my 4/4 sport. It will still be 'just right' even when the paint starts to fade and the leather age and wear. It will age like an old friend and I won't really see the wrinkles.

Complexity, as you put it, is why I decided to go for the XR as a base bike. Its just basic lump of an engine and a steel chassis and not much else. It's built like a brick sh*t house (like only H-D knows how) and it will go on forever. Sure, it's got fuel injection and electronic ingition, but that's not really rocket science today...it only has two spark plugs to pander to and the engine is still pretty lazy even with this more sporty lump. As motorbikes go this one is pretty simple, just a bit less crude than an 'old timer'. It goes, stops and corners better than an equivalent 'classic bike' so it's safer to use on modern roads imho.
Ok Graham and other interested parties.....here she is so far.....(and I am not planning to add chrome in the future)

Sort of Brough SS... A bl..dy great lump of engine / gearbox, and not too much else. Draws the eye in!
I like the look... Will be watching for camera

Thanks for your encouragement Graham.
Glad you like the logic and where I am heading, but don't hold your breath if you want to see it develop too much in the near future. It will evolve over time.
At the moment I'm getting to know it a bit better, out on the road. She might be a big girl, but she's big in all the right places. laugh2

Well, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
And we all know these things are not built in a day smile
