I was one of the lucky 82 blokes who was able to buy one of the "American Roadsters" the cars made to use up the airbag inventory in the factory in 2003. I love the car and I am driving it more these days, but it still does not have 10,000 miles on it yet. ( I know I know, drive it more) But my question is, the tyre's are in good shape and hardly worn, but they are at least 20 years old by now. How long should they go before being replaced?

Most people work on around 8 years as a maximum.
After a puncture I once fitted a spare tyre to my old 4/4 that was 23 years old - just to get me home at slow speeds. The surface was very hard and it had virtually zero grip. It was renewed the next day.

Change them now, or sooner.
The tread will be so hard now it will offer very little grip.
I know you don't get much rain down there but I wouldn't like to drive that car in the wet.

I changed mine at 6 years, probably only around 15000 miles on them.
Huge difference in wet grip but also a huge difference in ride quality which I didn't expect.

Not only will you notice much better grip and improved ride quality (as others above have said) but perhaps also consider the legal implications in today's litiginous society.
If (heaven forbid) you are involved in an accident and the insurance company assessor spots tyres that are 20 years old on the car, I feel pretty sure they would try to claim contributory negligence (even if the other party was totally at fault).

When I got my plus 8 the tyres were about 12 years old but looked perfect with no cracking and minimal wear
However I knew they were well past their best so I changed them for decent new ones for around £200
The difference in ride, grip comfort, handling and noise was astonishing!
Get them changed, it’s not much cost compared to the value of the car (let alone you) and well worth the investment
2012 Plus 4 in Sport Green. Much comfier than the Plus 8!
