Hi all, I have a sticking caliper on my 1990 Plus 8. GoMoG states 2 pot calipers were used between 1978 and 1993 but doesn't mention any changes during this period.

However searching for a service kit there seems a discrepancy between suppliers as to the suitability of the kits for model years. I have found kits allegedly suitable for model years 1978 to 1993 and another with suitability for model years 1978 to 1984. Does any one know please, whether there were any changes to the Plus 8 Girling calipers around 1984. Thank you.

There were two types of caliper fitted during that period
The Girling M16 and the Girling T48

I don't bother with service kits, I prefer to send my calipers away to be reconditioned.

By the time you've factored in a pair of new pistons, seal kits and maybe struggled to remove a sheared off bleed nipple or two, there's not much in it! Plus they come back nice and clean and replated.

PM me for the details of the firms I use

Thanks for your replies chaps. There is lots of information on M16 calipers on a Google search, but not so for the T48 type. Simon, do you know whether there was a change over date for the two different types or was it a "fit what's available"?

Arwyn, yours is probably a sound policy and I could yet follow it but for me part of the joy or otherwise of Morgan ownership is the maintenance challenge.

Hopefully I will get the calipers off over the week end and measure the piston diameters which may or may not help.....

I believe the change is in 1978 to the T48 Girling. (the caliper has T48 cast into it )
However MMC being MMC do bounce parts around depending on what they find on the shelf.....

In a very recent thread I offered to post a pic of my Mid 80`s +8 calipers... But no takers, then this thread popped up so thought to grab and post a couple of pics, in the hope they help..?

For sure with trade links and pressures on time and of course the rise of lawyers for you, the safest advice is ever to hand the task to experts and more so when typing of brakes... But there are still some old fuddy duddies who still take things apart and have a go at repairing the kit themselves, just as was expected of many Morganeers in ye olde days... and being of that type, I stripped and cleaned the pistons on my calipers, fitted new seals and brake pads a couple of years back .

The brake pads were under the trade name TRW and listed as GDB6111 which were suited to various old Opal cars, and a Lotus Esprit S2... "Go figure" as our American cousins would say... I also ordered a fitting kit which arrived and was under the trade name of Apec, listed as Kit 200, the pins fitted but the anti rattle springs were too short, fortunately my springs were in reasonable condition thus a replacement was not required (see pic). I may have the seal kit numbers somewhere if I root around a bit. At the same time I bought the seals I also bought seals for the master cyl for both brake and clutch, and the same for the rear wheel cylinders, as well as a couple of new wheel cylinders to have as spares. From a dull memory the seals came in Green Lucas boxes and the wheel cyl in Girling boxes...

EDIT, looking closer at the pic, I think the pins did not fit and that I used the spring clips from the kit to retain the original pins which were in good enough condition when inspected, thus if you buy the kit hoping to replace problem pins, you may be disappointed..
