Got a letter today from Merc central to tell me that there was a recall on my new car for a software update on the emergency help system that I didnt know that I had. But, and this is the dodgy bit, the car will download and install this software update automatically and without any action on my part.

My car could end up chatting to some bird in Dusseldorf . Could it suddenly start driving on the wrong side of the road? Might it be checking up on where I take it and reporting back to HQ? For that matter could it suddenly decide to head towards Poland?

This level of efficiency is entirely alien to a British motorist. I shall buy a Jag next time round.

I read my car insurance policy a few weeks ago. There is now a paragraph that refers to vehicles with advanced driver assist functions, the insurance is only valid where the vehicle is up to date with regard to the latest version of the software. It also states that the installed software / firmware must be manufacturer approved.

I would assume this is a good thing as it saves you a trip to the retailer and time waiting around for it to be fixed. I suspect you also have free navigation map updates that you are able to trigger, in case you didn't know.

I can not speak for all brands but `I know Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes off free built in SIM connectivity at no charge. Some are for 3 where others, like Audi, offer 3 years. Google Maps, live traffic, streaming, Google Search etc.

It's this connectivity that allows all the downloading and the emergency help. God willing you will never need it but a nice sense of security should you do. I believe your Merc also bundles in roadside and technical support. You should have two buttons, SOS and a wrench marked one. Best pull out the manual and have a read and more importantly enjoy the benefits of this all!

There are plenty of You Tube Clips showing you use all the driver assist functions in a Mercedes.Not sure which model you have but there is a Green SOS button above the mirror on mine .Also if you have a tow bar fitted with electrics the approved fitter will update the software to tell the SOS system you are towing a trailer ,so if recovery is needed a suitable tow truck will be sent !

At least we at Audi are taking that pretty serious...

I’ve just sold the Moody 31. I took the new owner on a trial sail from Portishead to Penarth on Wednesday in a good force 5, dead on the nose (as usual in the Bristol Channel). The boat went beautifully, the new owner was very sick 🤢, but the sale went through.

I’m now limited to 20% of the Impala, 6 weeks on Bavaria 46 in the Ionian (with no work needed on my part), and a Wayfarer.

that`s the same for me.
simplicity in modern cars is something different than ever before.
It is a technical complexity most customers never really realise.
Just push the start button and go.
You do not fiddle with starting procedures, climate things, searching for a radio station or having paper maps on your knees while driving a foreign city.

Push start, enter destination on sat nav and the rest is cared for.

Car tells you if service is required etc.

ok - still a mile to go but the goal is set.

In the city I like just riding a bike - absolutely simple.
Love the Morgan and the eco - much more simple than the eco from a technical standpoint.
Not idiot proof to drive.
My e-tron is much more simple to drive. No quirks mean no adventure...
On business trips I love adventure free travel;-)
