The car hasn't been started in at least 15 years and we think we've narrowed it down to the distributor or the coil (coil/ condenser issues)

Any tips are appreciated .

Would anyone know what the correct coil replacement part would be for a 1974 4/4

I noticed in some older thread that people had recommended an Aldon electronic distributor - would anyone here recommend this and if so, same question, how would I know which part number I should opt for.

New to this board so apologies in advance if this information is freely available somewhere.

Thanks,

Rob

Assuming it has standard for that period Ford 1600 Xflow engine, I would suggest fitting new points and certainly condenser as a start before checking for spark. If none then try a new coil, all obtained as suitable for common car of that era, Cortina/Capri etc. Bear in mind though the coil needs to work with ballast resistor if fitted.

I've fitted a Accuspark conversion kit to my Dizzy and been very impressed. Works well, and good price. The previous SimonBBC one failed very quickly.

Your dizzy could be FoMoCo, Lucas or Bosch.

I'm using a Bosch Red Coil (Ballast), with an Accuspark Ballast Resisitor. However you can fit a Non Ballast Coil, and bypass the resister.

Bosch Red

Accuspark

I'd go for new plugs, leads, Dizzy Cap, rotor arm if you've not already done so.

Or a blocked carby jet, is it getting fuel to the motor? Not just to the carby, stale fuel can gum up jets. A quick check would be to squirt Aerostart down the carby and see if it fires up.

First to block on mine are the idle jets - easy to whip out and clean without dismantling anything. One either side of the Weber 32/36DGV

Whoa whoa whoa!

Before you start trying to start it after such a long lay up, just get some lubrication down the bores first

A bit of diesel will do but if you don't fancy that you could use some light oil.

The idea is to lubricate the bores prior to start up and prevent piston ring breakage or wear

Pull it round on a spanner a couple of turns just to make sure everything is free.

Pop the plugs out, disconnect the coil and spin the engine over on the starter until the oil pressure guage registers pressure

I reckon if they've nailed it down to 'no spark', that ship has unfortunately sailed smile smile

But Arwyn is totally correct here. OK oiling the bores might have been missed but PLEASE whip out the plugs and turn the engine over on the starter to get some oil pressure before going for a start.

It is excellent advice, but if they've worked out that there's fuel getting in (engine driven pump), and that there is a fault with the electrical system, I imagine that the engine been spinning like a good 'un for a fair while........

Just read the original post Phil....where does it say anything about fuel getting in or the engine been spinning?

You know what they say about assuming....
