We had a very pleasant visit to Malvern and the factory. After a certain amount of research on the internet we decided to stay at the Cotford Hotel. The rooms have a certain old fashioned charm and are quite comfortable. Barbara was very attentive and helpful with a small travel requirement. The restaurant is nothing less than superb, Chris is simply a genius in the kitchen and the staff are attentive and give service with a smile.

We arrived a little late for our appointment at the factory and as we drove in the gate we saw a Plus 4 in exactly the colours we had thought of buying. We both said “look they have our car ready for us!”

As it turned out that was the car we were to take for a test drive and in due course we exited the factory gate and headed towards Ledbury. We were lucky with both the weather and the traffic and were able to drive with the hood down in warm sunshine and were able to get along at a reasonably smart pace. Following a short walk around Ledbury we somewhat reluctantly headed back to surrender the car.

Alis and the Plus 4 - Note the happy smile smile

My impressions: I found the ride much more comfortable than that of my friends 1999 4/4 and I liked the extra power and torque. In general terms I liked the handling and the steering response. The car has a pleasant exhaust note and at 50 mph the total noise, engine, road, wind etc., did not present any problems to conversation. On the negative side I am not entirely comfortable with the resistance (return spring pressure?) and the length of travel of the brake pedal. I guess that is something I will get used to.

After returning to the factory we tagged on to the next factory tour and very much enjoyed our visit. We took the opportunity to ask questions about some of the cars we saw in production. Morgan must have the most enthusiastic staff of any automotive factory in the world and we always received a willing response with a smile.

At the end of the day, after many discussions about colour choices, we decided to order the following car and options:

Morgan Plus 4 (LHD)
Colour Sports Ivory
Leather upholstery in Mulberry
Reclining Sports Seats
Mohair hood in Maroon
Walnut dashboard
Air conditioning
Elasticated door pockets
Map reading light
Clock
Radio CD inc. speakers etc
Spare wheel cover
4 Tread rubbers (2 per side)
Luggage rack
Digital photo build book
Battery conditioner
Webflex car cover (outdoor / indoor use)

I am undecided about sun visors and a little unsure whether to stay with the tread rubbers or have no tread rubbers at all for that clean look. We have, and still are thinking of an alternative of interior trim in Saddle Brown with a black hood (the brown mohair unfortunately does not match any of the leather choices).

I have to say that we like the classic look of the colours we have chosen but also feel we are being a little unadventurous for what is essentially an adventurous car. Two other options considered are blue with beige upholstery or a deep metallic burgundy which also looks good with beige upholstery. Unfortunately a beige hood, whilst looking nice, would be very difficult to keep clean.

We are expecting to take delivery at the end of February or in the first week of March so we have time to change our minds on colours or refine our choices a little.

The drive home to Lake Como will be something to look forward to during the cold winter months.

Sorry about such a long post. I hope some find it interesting. Any and all comments greatly appreciated.

Peter

I would go for the sun visors.
I'm not convinced that aircon is worth the extra complexity. Is it available now on the Plus 4???
Ivory with brown interior & hood also looks very good.

Where we live in Northern Italy the summer temperatures reach the high 30's with a tropical humidity. Even riding a motorbike in protective gear means taking a sweat bath. So yes, for me, aircon is a must. It has just become available on the Plus 4. Morgan has already been testing it for some cars ordered for an Asian or Middle East country, I forget which.

I agree about the ivory with brown but unfortunately to get a decent brown for the hood you need to go to a vinyl hood. The mohair brown does not look good with the saddle brown leather so for mohair it would have to be black.

Hi Peter,
Glad you enjoyed your day with the Morgan. It is much the same car as I have coming in Sports Ivory with Saddle Leather.
Ours left the factory on Monday and is now on its way thru Singapore to Christchurch. My first impression of an Ivory Morgan has stuck with me over many years so was the only colour for me.

We have opted for the Black vinyl hood because of the classic look and the ease of cleaning. (not that we anticipate having the hood up)
We choose to have no treads fitted or door handles for a cleaner look.
Overriders only and round side mirrors.
We have black carpet to match the hood trimmed with saddle leather.
We choose ss wheels with no cover on spare(it looks too nice to cover).
we are getting most as you are except Radio and Clock.(apparently radio is hard to hear above 90 k)
We were talked out of visors by the nz agent.
We hope to see ours early December in time for Christmas.

Savour the wait....
Regards,
John

Peter,
I forgot to mention we sat in the same car as you test drove on our factory visit in early August......We really enjoyed our visit and it tipped our hand to buy a +4.

Also we choose to replace the factory fitted steering wheel with a Motalita one in a colour to match the saddle leather. We have asked for the original wheel to mount a clock in.

Enjoyed driving by Lake Como some years ago amongst the motor cyclists on a Sunday. Lovly area.

Must go to watch the rugby.
Wales have just scored a penalty against France.

Have a good one.
John

I took delivery of my Plus 4 in January this year. Initally I felt what you did about lack of travel on the brake pedal but don't seem to notice it now. I would recommend staying with the 2 tread rubbers per side to protect your paintwork on entering and exiting.I love your choice of mulberry for the leather and all your extras look good except it seems a shame to cover up the spare wheel. I got the radio despite every one telling I would not be able to hear it and I was glad I did and use it often.
Enjoy the anticipation.

Brian

Hi GL,
Congrats with the car. wine (again)
My 2p worth on your questions, dont worry about being unadventurous with the colors, it is a trad looking car that goes very well with classic color combinations. I often see more "frivolous" combinations and always think it takes away some of the charm. The sport color options are spot-on imho. Ref the tread rubbers, I have had the double on my plus4 and nothing on my Roadster. I am very happy I left them off. Clean look as you say but also because they trap water and grit, its difficult to clean and wax the sills and they dont actually do anything. I find any shoe marks appear further out on the rounding. Protecting the paint on the sills can be done with 3M foil.
Cheers J

Peter, I enjoyed reading your account of your factory visit and Plus 4 order.

Thankfully you don't have too long to wait to take delivery of your car. wine

With respect to the colour of hood and interior, that really is personal choice but I have a very interesting brown leather on my car and I wonder whether it would match the brown mohair hood better? I'll try to post a link to some photos; although if you like it, the best option is to order a colour swatch, to view it properly.

I found some photographs of the interior of the Morgan Aeromax whilst they aren't the best photos, and don't represent the interior well, but give you an idea.

Hi Peter,
Congrats with your car, but I would go for a everflex hood in the same colour as the interieur.
Just look at my DB5, even after 45years !! its perfect.
