sospan, it seems we may think along similar lines relative to possible economic outcomes that we seem to have been heading toward for some time, and that Brexit would seem to have complicated matters to some degree in many areas of life, add Covid and climate change to the mix and there would seem to be challenges a plenty ahead..?

City folk moving to the countryside.....It seems animals, humans included, have been migrating since the beginning of time in search of advantage, even some insects make amazing journeys to find that all important advantage, just as our forefathers abandoned the countryside to live in cities for so many reasons of imagined or real advantage. My guess is that there should be no real surprise that we divide into tribes to enhance our personal advantage, and ultimately the advantage of our tribe..? Obvious examples of such behaviour has existed for millennia... ?

Migration for advantage as found in cities can create ghettos, or communities within communities if you prefer, be they of a different culture, skin colour, financial standing, or whatever other lines of division one might seek to create, there are way too many variations to list, but all finding themselves in whatever location as the result of their personal instinct or that of their forebears to find a better life, be it pigeon holed in a multi story city flat, or just a bit further out of town in the leafy suburbs or a tad further out in a quaint little village..or even in another different country from which your income is or has been derived.

As for the recent rush to the countryside by those who find they can now work from home as the result of technological advance... No surprises there then as they are but the tip of the iceberg given the huge increase in human migration in more recent times since man became more easily mobile, be it those Brits who were spat out of the workplace with enhanced pensions along with those who sold their former city council dwelling and are now living in Spain, or the mud hut dwellers who many years ago found access to to information on the Western world when Mr Murdoch beamed the "Dallas" lifestyle into their towns then villages and now their phones, any surprises that they might naturally think.. I want some of THAT......?

Yup the spread of information technology along with tribal instincts and search for advantage creating death and destruction as ever it does amongst humans, would seem to have increased the momentum relative to population shifts in all directions, the least of which seems likely to be city folk moving to the countryside seeking...err... a better quality of life, or in more base terms... advantage..?

Seems on a Bojo has taken steps to reduce the powers of the NIMBY tribe in England (?)..who are bound to be upset with the process of change..?

I suspect there is much more to come in this story of human nature, and it`s very real effect on evolutionary processes...?

We really haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg yet regarding migration resultant from climate change. With most of Africa projected to become a desert and rainfall to increase in places like the UK by over 50% by 2050, we haven't by any stretch of the imagination come to terms with how we will produce enough food to feed the ever growing world population, within more finite and shrinking suitable agricultural land. By 2050 we wont be able to grow enough cereal to feed the livestock necessary to maintain the current levels of meat protein in our diet.

I found myself nodding away to much of the above posts and selfishly contemplating what it all means for me when in fact, 'not much' is the answer. I will have shuffled off before the big changes start to reveal themselves and big changes there will be.

it seems to me that others point to a period where seismic shifts will take place in our societies, our work-style, population densities and the way the rural landscape looks. My children will see it and they will want the 2000 new houses on the outskirts of the village (actually more houses anywhere) that they can enjoy a home of their own - as we did. Also the inner cities will be emptied and re-populated by those willing and driven by their preferences and circumstances. Human migration will continue as it has for millennia and will challenge the economies of where they land before their contribution becomes more positive.

I doubt the value of any measure put in place to halt any of this, it will happen and the world will be different and may not be worse than we experience now. The crucial piece for me is to allow change and opportunity to co-exist without losing order. Prosperity for the majority depends on us maintaining a just and ordered society. Most migrants are fleeing the war, corruption and disorder that prevents a decent life. I saw this close at hand in Zimbabwe where corruption disadvantaged 99% of the population and ruined a country.

It just seems that there are so many metaphorical icebergs out there, all melting at a variety of different rates and spreading all sorts of issues around the planet.

We humans seem quite incapable of learning from well documented historical fact relative to our proven natural behavioural patterns in just about every set of circumstances we have faced from the ice age onward, which I suspect has provisioned us with more than enough data to argue over and fight over the differences in our adopted beliefs, and for as long as we might exist.

I think it was Adam Smith in the period termed the "enlightenment," who described the decision making of whoever had a plan and the power to put it into action, and which then might be accepted and followed by the people, had a good chance of creating a degree of well being within that population, and followed on by writing that the the fewer people within a population that might play by the rules, the more descent seems likely to be found with it that a population..? OK, OK, Adam Smith will have been far more eloquent in his writing, I just hope I have both understood and conveyed something reasonably close to that which he imparted all those hundreds of years ago. Anyone can please feel free to correct or...err... enlighten me... (-:

One has only to observe the resistance to govt determinations on Covid advice for our UK populations and the degree to which it was followed in a wide variety of situations ...? Given the known variety of possibilities for the disease to spread, it seemed as individuals we perhaps accepted some degree of the guidance as suited our personal priorities, or one might have taken the stance of a conspiracy theorist wholy or in part relative to our personal decision making..? I suspect there may be some conspiracy theorists in China too, but it seems authorities in China deal with such situations differently from here.. Shrug. Of course we in the UK seem free to spread Covid unlike the majority of Chinese...?

There seems to be differences between the anti-Covid measures of many countries, the effects of which will no doubt end up in history books of some future time.. The question is, will future populations learn from them..? I really would like to hope so, but if the war to end all wars is an example of expected human behaviour as it followed such a terrible event.... Hmm..?

As for corruption where there might be a bit of extra advantage to be found.... Really...??? (-: Bojo and Cameron have found out that in the world of ever increasing information on EVERYTHING, playing the game as once it was accepted if not expected to operate and did so for so very many centuries, has..err..evolved somewhat... ?

As for the evolutional process that created the "top 1%"..? I suspect as ever political parties of all shades were the fertiliser that created such a level of growth in that section of society, and no doubt we all played our part in varying degrees...?

I ain`t complaining, just observing and disappointed that there is so much in the way of continued suffering, when our greed/need aside, it seems perhaps best for a society to attempt to provide a sense of place and a sense of purpose for folk to feel worthwhile enough that they might assist others less advantaged than themselves on occasion..?

In the context of the current age of 'enlightenment'...... when eg one individual Elon Musk ( and any plan he had) can materially influence cryptocurrencies to such an extent as create massive bull and bear runs on unregulated transactions, demonstrates to me greed is now so endemic in most developed nations maybe we have lost a sense of shared humanity. A simple text he sent (stating a known position well understood before he supported Bitcoin over energy consumed by cryptocurrencies mining) just cost him $22bn and with him he dragged down many others blinded by greed............all rather sad and pathetic and doesn't bold well for the future..

I just read a report on a new problem police are having with bitcoin miners.

Historically houses where the electric meter reading went off the scale were considered as potential Marijuana growers as they use lights to help the plants. A group of police raided a home recently based on a tip off and various investigation points (power consumption from the company) and found a massive bitcoin mining farm!

Whoops.

Bitcoins require a lot of bullshit to flourish, so I have been told.
