I was thinking Assisi but maybe from a different angle than the long shots are normally taken from?

Umbria is correct, but not Assisi.

A white wine with the name of the city is well known,
and the Duomo is spectacular

It is Orvieto.
And Umbria is a very nice region; still undervalued by many!

We had a nice roadtrip to Umbria in our smart Roadster, Dorset overnight to Cherbourg, then down to Millau for an overnight stop and to take in the bridge, then onto an overnight stop in Genoa, then took the SP1 down the west coast until we branched off for our destination of Assisi, I went a bit wrong and came over some mountains via farm tracks.

We stayed there and took in places like Orvieto, Spoleto and others I can't recall got into the spirit of things and made great use of the car horn like the locals in the grid locked towns, after a nice stay headed back to UK via the Dijon region of France, in a reasonably priced chateau that was 10s of miles from anywhere, the restaurant was eye wateringly expensive, to our means.

Remember that trip fondly, great driving the back roads of Umbria in our smart Roadster a very nice trip.
