It was a great day for sure, and yes, a bit of friendly close formation lappage is always good fun! In fact the cloud of smoke was indeed caused by the offside front tyre deflecting so much under load that the tread itself (a more period look tyre with more obvious circumferential grooves that can grab onto things) got wedged under the side trailing edge of the mudguard. It certainly made for quite a spectacle and as I was always looking in the mirrors to make sure we were together, I too assumed that the engine had thrown in the towel. Fortunately - and as a huge relief to the young combatant as the car was his fathers' - once slowed, the mudfguard released its vice-like grip and things returned to normal. Game over for the close formation flying however..... He needs more pressure in the tyre next time out.

Just a thought - the right hand plug lead can get trapped under the steering column if it is not well clipped out of the way. This will damage the insulation and might cause misfiring at low revs. Misfiring will send unburnt fuel in to the glowing exhaust pipes where it ignites and burns causing the blackening. Maybe???

I’ve not had a chance to work on the car tonight but I will do the easy and now obvious Lambda-Switchover test, as well as a Protune interrogation. Clag in the injector making it stick open sounds very plausible to me, as do some of the other options. Fortunately I’d due at KH in 3 weeks, so I will try to fix it myself beforehand, but if I fail....

Skullmog wins the prize - top of the class Sir!! Seems that a track-days' worth of engine vibes had shooken the connector for the RHS lambda sensor loose - it was still visually 'connected', but probaly a few mm's out. I'd already removed LHS Lambda ready for the swap, so I switched sides regardless and went for a test drive. Initially that stuttering problem was still present (now on LHS pipe), but it soon cleared and we're broadly back to where we should be. I guess that loose connection prevented the Lambda from sending reliable, workable signals and it was only as the mapping moved onto Open Loop that the car ran correctly again. Closed Loop wasn't talking too well. There must have been a lot of clag build-up in that lambda as it took a while to clear and it's still very slightly evident, although not that you'd really notice.

So I am planning on popping a couple of new lambda's in there just in case.

Indeed - seems the Lambda sensor 4-pin connector rattled loose enough to lose comms, so RHS injector was not seeing anything coming back. Filled up with very rich-running gunk, so when moved to LHS exhaust, the problem moved too initially, but cleared thereafter. Have decided to buy 2x new Bosch sensors (which arrived yesterday), so that will be a job for the weekend hopefully. Car drove very well once problem cleared (even on the original lambda's), as it clearly liked its Italian Tune-Up at Goodwood:-)
