Think they use cctv. I operate ANPR and they use infra red that needs to see reflective plates. Most traffic cars have ANPR fitted as standard and they read vehicles travelling both ways.

They do use ANPR ?

I can attest to the fact that the Humber toll bridge has ANPR in the tag lane that not only reads black and silver number plates but square ones mounted on the wing of historic Land Rovers.

On a recent visit to Hull my brother gave the advice that I could use the tag lane if there was a long queue in the normal toll lane. He didn't explain that it was now card only payment of the modest £1.50 charge and they hadn't updated their card collection system hence queue. I took his advice and back home a few hours later went online to pay. No charge against this vehicle the website said. Tried again over 24 hours later and same result. Meant to check again but forgot. Then yesterday an hour over 7 days late remembered. Sure enough it came up with £16.50 (£15 late admin) to pay

Lesson learnt - brilliant ANPR, crap data updating.

They must use a different ANPR system to the police ours definitely does not read black and white plates and also struggles with dirty plates.

A recall a Police investigation on TV - looking into a suspects van that had a rear number plate in poor condition - it really slowed down reprimanding of the offender. With this in mind during MOT tests we are aware that enforcement cameras need to "read" number-plates. Any delaminated section of a plate or dirt comes up as a black portion on the image and hinders investigation. Sometimes the rules can seem petty but there is always a reason behind them. A bit like 30mph speed limits i guess - there for a reason.

I occasionally see a plate obscured by mud and that's often deliberate, but there are also some very dodgy faded plates around, yellow, but with grey digits, and also clearly designed to dodge speed cameras.

The only way to deter this attitude, (and badly spaced numbers) is big escalating fines, but we don't have the political will.

Here out in the sticks mid winter you sometimes can't even see the vehicle against a muddy backdrop never mind the number plate

I've noticed a considerable rise in the use of heavily tinted dark plates, front & rear on yoofs cars, often accompanied by illegally tinted front side windows, phat wheels and perhaps a strange smell from the glovebox...why don't they get 'pulled' ?

Don't be daft Cooper Man, our local scuffers let the yoof of today openly smoke weed outside the local cop shop of an evening. Stopping said vehicles are probably too much like hard work for them!
