Folks,
I have a 2009 Plus4 I would like to get a better than standard air filter for the car -- A)which is the best type and B) what is the reference number or equivalent Ford car(Fiesta or Focus) so I can buy the right one??!!

I hope this may be of help to you. I fitted a Pipercross ref no. PP -1620 to my Duratec engined 4/4 a couple of years ago. This is a panel filter and is a direct replacement for the ford unit in the filter box.The filter made the car a more responsive and seemed to free it up more than I expected .I am glad I fitted it, and for what it cost to buy it, well worth the money.
The filter for the 2 litre Duratec is listed as the same number for both 1800 and 2000 cars.

Do you also have experiences with cotton filters like K&N. Would you recommend and prefer a piper cross regarding 1) cleaning abilities and 2) performance?

I have never used a K&N filter so I can't really tell you any thing about them. The Pipercross is as far as I am aware of similar construction to the K&N so I should think there is not much to choose between them. The prices are pretty similar as is the fitting in the filter box.
A cleaning and retreating kit is available for the Pipercross . I think I paid abou twelve quid for one but as yet I haven't used the kit.
I am sure some one will put you(and me ) wise about K&N filters ,they seem to be a lot more popular than the Pipercross.
I have an excellent record of buying the wrong one with things like this.

Another make to consider is ITG which I've fitted to my 4/4 Sport. Similar in construction to the piper cross I think. Mogsport sourced mine for me and were very helpful.

I fitted a K&N to my 97 +4. It slots right into the exisitng air box.
It seems to make a difference and you don't get the loud induction noise you get with say an ITG without an airbox

My ITG fits the standard air box and I can't say there is any increase in induction noise.

My 1992 4/4 has a CVH Efi engine. On this engine the crankcase ventilation feeds back into the air intake pipe from the wheel arch into the filter box. So oily vapour is introduced into the incoming air as a normal thing. I have fitted a K&N as i don't think it will compromise or worsen what is already considered "normal"
I have not checked my MAF sensor yet though....
Seems a good idea when I sorn the car at end Nov for some cold weather refurb/cleaning/servicing.(Tax runs out then so taking the chance to do some work)
I have not noticed any issues with running to date but a clean up may show me a difference. I have had the car about 18 months and done about 7k miles. car has certainly loosened up in that time as previous owners had done very low mileages over preceding years - still only 30k on clock.

There has been a lot of on-line talk about K&Ns and MAF sensors over the last few years. So long as the filter is not over-oiled, there shouldn't be a problem.
