We've always done this, and it's amazing how quickly and widely your reputation as a good customer spreads. It works to our benefit as well as the tradespeople, on a couple of occasions we've had guys swing into action at short notice for us because we're seen as good people to work for, most recently when we had to have 11 mature ash trees felled at short notice.

Suffolk Coastal have used COVID as an excuse to pass over 6,000 houses (the committee is not needed just the planning officer approval) within a 10 mile radius of us. 2,000 in our village more than doubling the size and 2000 in Martlesham / Brightwell & Felixstowe. I assume to get in rates. Most of the land is owned by Trinity College Cambridge who are obviously cashing in their assets,
There is no real infrastructure planned so for me long may the shortages & price hikes go on.

You are the spot on with that, I've had clients pay me before the job is fully completed, they get preferential treatment whenever they want anything done.
And rightly so I think.
They also get a better quote because I know I won't have to wait for payment.

It was bad enough a few weeks ago. We partially re-deployed the refund from our 40th Anniversary holiday for a new patio and a new fence. The chaps that did the work had a real struggle. One merchant rationed them to 10 bags of cement a day (just enough for them on our job). Another increased cement from £4 to £5 a bag overnight. Then they had to wait a week extra for the fence panels (having ordered them just as they started our project.

They completed the whole project and then honoured the price quoted in March. Their margins must be suffering. Needless to say, when we got the final bill (exactly the same as the quote) we paid instantly.

Paul, sorry to hear you had to divert some of your 40th Anniversary holiday but pleased that you put some of it to good use in the shared interest.

It's always good to use the local boys and girls for these jobs that need doing and like you we pay on the dot, the old adage treat as you would like to be treated always works and you get preferential treatment over some other customers.

We have a saying down here "you always play with your playmates", it's one that seems to escape the second home owners that are forever bemoaning the fact they can never find a reliable tradesman grin2 that's what happens when they treat them like second class citizens, which many do...
