Hi my 97 +8 has a clunking sound when I roll it forward or backwards sounds like it’s off side rear wheel, had the brakes done recently unrelated to this issue that made no difference so I’m thinking maybe bearings? It happens whether it been stood or just back from a spin and more notable on full lock . Any suggestions would be appreciated

If you have wire wheels, make sure the centrelock nuts are tight.

Sometimes the LSD can click, which resonates through the spokes, and is more obvious on lock.

When was the diff oil last changed? You need an oil with friction modifier...... Friction modifier makes the fluid "slicker" so without the additive the limited slip clutches will grab and it will shudder going around tight turns.

Have the UJs on the drive shaft been greased.

The car was serviced in December at Oakmere and I asked them to check all the fluids and grease points that was 200 miles ago .I may have to get under it and check all was done . Wasn’t to impressed with them the car had no oil leaks before service now I have two ! Very minor but there

My money's on Dave W's comment re the LSD, it needs an oil change

+2 for the diff oil change, and thanks for the reminder, mines due. I also have light intermittent clunk on takeup.

I'm using MTF94 which I buy in 5l, with redline FM, but I'm likely changing diff oil every 18 months or so.

It's worth doing the gearbox at the same time, unless it was changed at last service/<25k miles.

Worth checking the U bolts on axle too.

These fluids are for the BTR axles, Salisbury are different.- see below from GOMOG site

The recommended oil for a LSD Salisbury (Plus 8s & 7HA and 12HA) is a 80/90 Hypoy oil for limited slip differential (LSD) axles (for example;
1. Castrol Hypoy LS90
2. Mobilube Mineral LSD 80/90
3. Royal Purple 80/90 LSD
4. Valvoline
5. Mobil 75/90

The recommended oil for a non-LSD Salisbury (4/4s and Plus 4s) is now Castrol 75/90 or its equivalent. Salisbury axle fluid should be ideally changed at 3000 miles intervals. One cannot exaggerate the need to be careful. Never mix old and new oils. Some of the newer dealers suggest what they believe to be modern synthetic equivalents. However, the Salisbury's are not noted for strength and parts are no longer made. A chipped Crown Wheel and/or Pinion will and has sidelined many Salisbury Morgans indefinitely, though they can be had with GREAT DIFFICULTY. As Salisbury's original recommendation has worked for 60 years, there is no logic in taking risks. A BTR can be fit, but MMC waiting times run into many months for a BTR and it is no longer known whether Classic Morgans will be supplied since these models have been abandonned. The cost of the axle and labor to remove the hubs, swap and weld the brackets and install a new BTR will cost £4000...unless the work is done by the owner and he is VERY lucky in their part sourcing.

Never had a problem with Salisbury axle at all!!

Did a rebuild on a 7HA in a sprint/hillclimb car over Christmas, one that had done 175,000 miles, replacement engine but still the same axle! Speed Mog championship winning car too!
