Do you have alloy or wire wheels? If wires there is also the possibility of wear in the centrelock splines.

Hi Graham, I have wires , took them off today to clean them well it is Father’s Day and spending a few hours cleaning wheels is a dad thing . Checked them and all seems fine though Goliath’s big brother must have put them back on after it’s service took some getting off

Whenever I have had a clunking sound ( or perhaps more a of a “dunk” sound) from the back, especially when reversing direction, I have simply removed the wheels, cleaned and regreased the splines and mating surfaces and it has cleared the problem.

Spoke to the guys at oakmere re the oil and that wasn’t changed so the leak isn’t down to them so sorry lads crossed wires there , so may change the axle oil and see if that sorts the clunking if not I’ll let them have a look . I’ll let you know how it goes

Further to the clunking issue I changed the oil in the axle to the recommended for a BTR axle as I have no idea what was in there or how long though it only has 40k on the clock .the amount I took out was 1.25 litres so down quite a bit then put 1.7 litres and no clunking ! I also checked the old oil to see if there was any debris in and not a bit so hopefully no damage done

Bit of a conflict on oil advice in this posting. The handbook for my 2011 +4 BTR axle) states 1.7 litres of 80w140 semi synthetic for the rear axle. When I changed mine 4 years ago, the nearest I could get was Castrol 75W140 Syntrax.
So wondering where the specification of a 75w90 came from? Incidentally, the handbook states the same oil for the whole range of models, so don’t think it’s a typo.
