Austers were used as glider tugs. I had the pleasure of a flight in one towing a glider. I had to sit on a canvas chair behind the pilot.bet you can't do that these days.

Grumpy I love your photo and car - the aspect, car colour, angle of the wheels are all perfect, is your car a Roadster? I remember taking photos of my Silvia from down low, photos look good from that level.

Two cracking pics there Richard, thanks for posting. It seems possible that the French find more value in the acquisition and wearing of patina in their old cars than do we or the Americans as looking new or better than new seems to be the holy grail in many cases...?

A while back I posted a pic I took at the last LM Classic of a well patinated Bugatti that had a new tyre fitted by the company that was on site to supply such services. I do not know the story behind the Bugatti appearing with three suitably patinated wonderful alloy wheels and one polished to perfection wheel...? I suspect the tyre fitter may have wondered at the construction of the drum and wheel as a one piece alloy casting and thought it deserved extra attention...Yikes..!

Seems to beg the question, can you get OCD relative to the preservation of patination...?

George, your Bugatti story made me smile, I'll bet the owner was going quietly mad at the polishing of the wheel.

I love looking around the old racing machines at Goodwood Revival (Duncan springs to mind) and seeing the real years of character ingrained on them, it means far more to me than looking at anything that has been polished to death they have no appeal to me lined up at a car show or museum.
I polish mine once a year out of a sense of duty only.

Perhaps there is a patination appreciation group after all..

I have had shiny machinery but my heart is with things with 'character' .... one thing I regret is that my 4/4 had 'character' that ran far deeper than a rub with an oily rag and the essential rework has inevitably led to it wnding up shinier than I'd like . . Time and miles will sort that though 🙂

Anyone with a love of cars showing their age, should try to get to the Vintage Revival at Montlhèry.
Hopefully to be held again next year, just south-west of Paris.
We attended in 2017 and 2019 and just loved the event,

The cars and bikes are wonderful as are the people.
No corporate hospitality, just a very decent (pre-booked) lunch available to all.

I suspect I have related this story before, perhaps too many times, but as an old duffer I can repeat myself in the same sentence without knowing while typing, sigh!

While on eMog one of our American cousins reported an old well used/far travelled Morgan turned up wearing it`s history in a car park full of polished and perfect Morgans... You can guess which car had the folk gathered around it, all wanting to know it`s story... So much so that it was elevated into the foyer of the hotel at which the event was being held...(-:

I hold my hand up as being guilty of spending hours polishing alloy engine internals as well as their externals on my old Brit Motorcycles as a yoof. When I decided that a Morgan might be a fine substitute for a real vintage car with performance enough to keep up with modern traffic situations and more (-: I searched for many a year to find some old Mog in need of restoration at a price that reflected it`s condition.. None to be had at the time, and as a result thanks to Lorne the GoMoG webmaster I ended up with a concours condition restored Mog... First day I had it home, I ragged it up an unmade road with stones flying... Best to get it over than suffer death by a thousand cuts every time I might hear a stone hit the perfect paintwork... All that typed today some twenty years and 26k miles later it still looks pretty smart and a credit to Kevin`s workmanship. Kevin is the professional repairer/restorer who rebuilt it. circa Y2K

I suspect the patination purists might spend a great deal of time trying to differentiate "originality" in terms of the appearance of age, and the ageing techniques applied to cars as being similar to the sort of faux patination that the antique trade can apply so well to furniture ...? (-: Yeah well we guys have to have something to keep us occupied in discussion in our dotage...(-:

As for the evaluation of polished to perfection. Whether the French or others might pay more for a patinated machine wearing it`s history well, than they might when compared to a similar aged and well polished machine, I know not. Lorne`s +8 was (is?) quite the most polished Morgan and perhaps unusually also perhaps one of the most travelled Morgan`s I know of .... Each to their own ideals of that which is perfect for them..?
