This little mod could save some tears…. I never liked the original rear bumper mounting bolts as it always looked like it was only a matter of time before disaster struck. The bumper is fixed to spring brackets and the ends of the fixing bolts are less than 10mm from the rear panel. It only needs a very small force on the bumper for the bolts to contact the panel. Sure enough disaster struck when ‘white van man’ nudged me at the traffic lights a few weeks back. Only a small amount of damage but a costly rear panel respray curtsey of his insurers. Hey Rog,
The area is sensitive. I got myself that typical dent a few years ago. Bumped reversely yet slowly into my neighbor's Polo. (Not a scratch in the Polo). It's still there ... as a reminder.
I like your design although it doesn't solve the issue: Those brackets are weak, prone to bend under the slightest pressure and cause expensive damage to the bodywork. If they'd only be tougher, maybe rectangular/tubular....

Which would tend to push any deformation into the rear chassis.

I find Rog's measure very good because it gives more space for deformation and also because the impact is not concentrated on one ugly point of the screw thread but it is distributed over the surface.
And on the other hand, I totally agree with Graham. Nothing is worse than a bending of the chassis. I had an old Mercedes with a trailer hitch many years ago. Another car could not brake in time and my car was totaled because the whole rear part from the rear window on bent down. The trailer hitch was I think somewhere attached to the axle or the side members.

Yes I think its better this way albeit not perfect. I do like the bumpers though as they do offer some level of protection. The stainless material is forgiving. Light surface marks, scuffs and grazing can be removed and nicely repolished.

The bolt in our year 2000 plus 4 is a 3/4 by 2.75 inch unf hex bolt. Unfortunately the bolt and bumper brackets were painted at factory and after 20 years have rust creep..... In the good old days we had John Worrell of Heart of England Morgan who supplied the spacers and bumper brackets in chrome or stainless.... Rog, perfect! What about to temper and forge the bracket to make it flexible, similar to the rear spring leaves? Then, it would not bend and keep its shape after a collision? I don't know, would it be possible to temper and forge the original, or necessary to use another kind of steel? Or maybe to form it from an old leave? Anyway, many thanks for the excellent idea, I am going to replace the bolts on my Mog as well. What a lovely idea but alas I’m not sure. The bumper bracket is already a spring and by adding a valve spring between the blade and bracket would mean the two springs working in series.
