This little mod could save some tears….

I never liked the original rear bumper mounting bolts as it always looked like it was only a matter of time before disaster struck. The bumper is fixed to spring brackets and the ends of the fixing bolts are less than 10mm from the rear panel. It only needs a very small force on the bumper for the bolts to contact the panel.

Sure enough disaster struck when ‘white van man’ nudged me at the traffic lights a few weeks back. Only a small amount of damage but a costly rear panel respray curtsey of his insurers. I could have done the same just reversing into the bucket in the garage.

So now that the car has been repaired, this evening while the rest of the world was glude to some football match I decided to swap the bolts for some stainless csk setscrews.

Maybe it’s a bit less vulnerable now…….

Great Idea and looks much neater! I dont have bumpers so the damage would be worse on my car.

A bit "off the wall" this but could you have fitted very strong valve springs between the bumper blade and the mounting bracket, this might gave you a little more hope for no damage. I did this years ago on the tow hitch on my traction engine and it worked a treat, only for comfort though, traction engines are not known to be delicate.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

What a lovely idea but alas I’m not sure. The bumper bracket is already a spring and by adding a valve spring between the blade and bracket would mean the two springs working in series. I think both would see the same force so the main spring/bracket would still deflect the same frown

But a thicker section bracket might help thinking

What size of screw did you use? May be too late for me but save the same happening again.
Have same problem from a nudge in a French hotel car park, other driver left no note, surprise surprise.
Will get repaired one day, have hidden for now with a well placed GB plate!!

Thanks Richard thumbs

Re the screw size. They are M8 x 70’s (and long enough for my rack brackets too). I have ordered up some M10’s but they are still in the post so will probably stay with these. I also countersunk a couple of M12 stainless washers so that the heads seat nicely and still work in the slots in the brackets
