In the main, football in the UK is the sport of the bottom of society. Conversely Rugby started off at a public school. Whether you get yobbish supporters at rugby league I do not know.

For many in the UK the people they mix with and relate to are overwhelmingly the same social class as themselves. I was like that and it was only when I started to manage a factory with a blue collar workforce including contractors recruited from the output of the local jail, that I got an idea of how , both good and bad, those at the bottom of society behaved. The racism based on fear and insecurity for example. The class hatred. The attitude towards plod.

Sure this is a sweeping generalisation and there are lots of exceptions. But there are even more who fit the above and the tribalism of soccer supporters is a part of it..

Dont forget, by the way, that the UK anthem is often booed in Scotland.

If so it's a sad comment on the times. I would have halted the game, emptied the stadium and invited back in anyone who was prepared to show a sporting attitude.
Nick

Yes that is exactly what happened, it started to die down a bit once the game got underway, but you were certainty aware of the poor sportsmanship evident in the crowd for a lot of the game.

I tend to agree that rugby fans are usually better behaved and more respectful, however increasing you do see more unsporting behaviour from the crowds eg in any French game not only will the fans let their team know how they feel about the teams performance, they're usually quite vocal when it comes to opposition team during kicking eg conversions. Certainly no where near the levels seen in football, which demonstrates tribalism at its worst.

Never mind that, what about Rangers and Celtic fans? That's why I hate football.

It's not quite as violent as it used to be, I remember the West Brom games against the London teams in the late 60's (used to get in for free with my friend and his Father who supervised the policing of the games, so stood on side lines etc) and the amount of edge sharpened coins and darts etc that used to be thrown during the game at the opposition's goalie and supporters was something to behold. I remember all the 'away' supporters coach windows often being smashed on a regular basis. It was not for me........

Complete trains used to get trashed when they put on specials.

It should have been sorted out years before. But at least it puts that demographic off the streets every time a match is played.

It’s the best time for a Morgan run with them watching the football.
I take full advantage of it whenever there is a big football/cricket or golfing event on 😋

Rugby and Motor sport is a different matter altogether.

Not really a highly exciting game, boring Ukraine except for minute 77 to 85, but four terrific fantastic goals for England. Congratulations.
