Namib desert. The plant is a Welwitschia Mirabilis, several hundred years old. The plant is not dead but in good condition. I worked up there for 6 months back in 1973 and managed a tour of Etosha Pan just along the road a bit - a spectacular landscape and peoples.

Namibia is one of the best countries south of the equator. And the Etosha National Park is a great experience. Unfortunately NamibAir was not very reliable but the only airline with direct flights from Munic. During two periods of working in Africa for five years in total I can honestly say that you may leave the place but it never leaves you, it is a spectacular vibrant country full of excitement and new opportunities like no other for us.
We came very close to settling in Cape Town.

A great continent, but I was on some places where I would not like to settle for permanent.
Nigeria and the Sudan are locations where a return is not on my high priority list.
But I know exactly what you mean.
