Having sold the boat ( sob, sob ) I have set about getting rid of some of the large stock of boaty bits that remain. Outboards and charts and books and rope have all gone but last week was the turn of some new still in packaging buoyancy aids and some wooden oars. All offered via Gumtree.

Leaving aside how I managed to aquire 6 new unused buoyancy aids in various sizes ( I havent a clue) , I advertised them at what I thought were sensible prices bearing in mind they were at least 20 years old. Chap came and bought two. How much? £12. Here is £20.

Much the same with the oars which were £10 and again I was given a £20.

Initial reaction was pleasure at their generosity. Then I got to wondering. Am I so out of date that what I think is a sensible price is silly low? Is a £20 note now just loose change when I see it as serious money? Am I in a 1950s time warp value wise. Could well be since I was staggered to read that it is possible, never mind sensible, to pay JLR £200k for a new Range Rover! They ought to be £30k!

Am I completely out of touch.

I've found cash has been accumulating over the last year - rather like your buoyancy aids, I don't know why. I popped into a little local cafe last week and gave them a fiver for a £2.10 espresso. I just couldn't be bothered with the change, what would I do with it?

It is getting increasingly difficult to get anything but £20 in foldables out of cash machines. Finding a £5 these days is quite rare.

I took out £200 at the start of the second wave of the pandumbic and still have £40 of it left, pay by plastic contactless has really moved on.

Covid is killing cash without a doubt........we hardly use cash at all now.

If you fancy a bit of nerd amusement, there's a guy on You Tube who gets £500 in 50p coins, and searches for the rare ones...................

We've got two sets of the Beatrix Potter one's (50p) collected for the two Grandaughters, I don't think the Grandson is too fussed as there isn't one with a digger on it

Two sets of currency from all the countries we worked in and we always gave our three children and then Grandchildren a full set of proof mint coins from their DOB.

I expect they'll inherit our Krugerrands someday too. always had a soft spot for my Springboks they have served me well you never go wrong with gold and diamonds long term...

Earlier this year I was at the counter in my bank getting cash out ( more than ATM limit). A man just walked up asking when the new 50p coins would come in. He just butted in. The cashier asked him to go to the reception desk. He asked again. I was about to tell him to **** *** but the cashier got the message across! Cheeky sod!
I have a box of various coins (UK plus foreign) including special editions ( not very valuable) crowns, presentation sets
, some series of £1 coins with various designs, some old pre decimal UK coins inc silver sixpences and two new £1 coins we struck ourselves on a visit to the Mint at Llantrisant. The town known as Polo....the hole with a mint.
I need to get round to going through them properly to check values.
One bonus we get from the bank is a “Save the change” cashback style payment back to us. When we use our cards to pay they give us back the top up to the next £ . I make sure when putting petrol in to slip past the whole £. Last time it was £40.01 so I got 99p credited. A nice little earner! So far this month we have had about £18 back. It’s been a busy month!
My guess it is a ploy to reduce cash use and encourage card payment. We’ll take it while it lasts!

I was checking on ebay the asking price of a Silver Dollar and notice the New Penny issued in 1972 was worth money.(it was changed to one penny later on.
Some sellers asking up to 6000:pounds !
I raided my change box found 7 of them!
Thought I am in the money till I started scrolling down the listings there are a number at 10p !
But always worth checking as the metal content in early coins can be valuable.

Since the arrival of Covid my credit card statement has gone from just a handful of items each month to three pages. Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) now goes on card or is paid by internet banking. I still have £40 cash in my wallet that's been there since the start of 2020. Missus is happy as it has boosted her M&S points!
Saves wear on the pockets too not having to carry loose change around.

A lot of the younger generation don't use cash. My oldest son is one. On holiday recently we had to pay his fair on the turntable ferry as they didn't accept card or phone payment.

Calmac are accepting card payment only due to covid.

Regarding the OP, I advertised some surplus power tools on FB recently at what I considered reasonable prices, some paid the asking price. Some bartered 🤔. One guy offered me £60 for a bench saw I advertised at £100, the nearly new TCT blade alone cost me £50!!!!

A Honda suitcase generator, working condition but needed a fuel tank repair, similar ones on fleabag at £200/£300, I asked for £50, guy phoned and said" if I pay now by transfer will you take £30? Can you guess the reply?😂
