Considering my mileage (15-20k annually in the past) most things happen to me first. frown I am the original Mprgan crash test dummy. (wryly) Considering how far afield I have mogged, most repairs are done roadside.

Here is the story. When Maurice Owen was fitting the Sd1 into a Morgan (1977) he couldn't get the Sd1 bellhousing far enough into the car because of the clutch slave, properly placed lower than the master cylinder, hit the bulkhead crossmember. To adjust to that, he cut the cast placement for the LR clutch slave off the bellhousing and welded up the resultant hole, Instead, he used a MUCH shorter clutch slave at the top of the bellhousing and used a shorter actuating post. Even then, this tiny clutch slave has to be ground at the rear to fit..and this is after you buy the wrong clutch slave replacement for a Sd1 LR V8. frown

The short rod, the short clutch slave, the weird angling and the placement of the slave ABOVE the master (a no-no) conspire together to give the Morgan clutch slave during that 15 year period of Plus 8 production a very short lifespan. In my experience, they last from 10-20k miles, which was usually less than my annual mileage. I always carry a spare with me,

However, I found that, rather than buying a new Morgan affair, that having a snackered one re-sleeved in stainless (which costs the same or less than new) makes it a forever part.

Just so the pst early 1990s crowd don't get cocky, smile Bill Beck, the former service manager who took over from Maurice, found he could fit the same bellhousing far enough rearward by altering the crossmember to dip at its centre and slicing much of the clutch slave casting on. This allows the Plus 8 to use the regular LR clutch slave and place it below the Master. HOwever, that makes me uncomfortable as well as it opened up the bellhousing to a buffet of debris. More here https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/allmorgan46.html#SLAVE

My advice. If you don't want to lose road time (2-week for turn around), buy a MORGAN clutch slave and carry it with you. When it fails, have it re-sleeved and refurbished. and carry THAT one with you until IT is called for. If you have storage time, just remove it during that period and have it done. Why lose the joy of a happy Morgan outing? Not to worry, we used to talk rank amateurs through the task of clutch save replacement.

Done 250k miles in my +8 1980. Clutch slave cylinder is one of the few components that only failed once. Diffs, gearboxes, steering boxes, wiper motors, alternators ..... and most other parts failed far more often in 38 years of ownership

smile Must be the Auto Gods.

I have done that type of mileage and, from memory, I have been between 5 on a 1984, 1990 and a 2002. until I discovered the cure, One time was at a major Eastern US event where many here were there. On the other hand, aside from my first LT77 I have never had an alternator, a differential (Salisbury or BTR), steering rack, a wiper motor or an alternator fail me though i have upgraded as I deemed wise. My comments do not come from my car alone, I am sent 5-7 new problems a day for the last 25 years.

I will trade you my old components for your old clutch salve. (smile)

Keep up your great usage!!
