I was offered a build slot for a 718 Spyder. It's the Boxster that is made by their Motorsport division and as rare as hens teeth so couldn't pass it up. That and the shortage of stock and build slots have driven used prices to crazy levels that it was the perfect time for such a swap. This time I'm going with blue so will be matching in hue with the 4/4

Having bought my ARP4 new in 2016, thinking I would keep it for enough years for the depreciation curve to start upwards again, like several others, I now find my thoughts turning towards a new Plus Four, however £75k - £80k is a huge amount of money to pay for a toy which will get minimal use, (my ARP4 has done less than 10,000 miles in 4 years).
However, I cannot think of any other car in the same class, with character, uniqueness, relative reliability, (which rules out 'classics') and some great owners to chat to. Can anyone come up with some thoughts on other vehicles I ought to be thinking about, for the amount I could get for my ARP4?
Paul. In a way I reckon you have answered your own question with your last paragraph. Character and quirkyness amount to much the same thing and if you see a Morgan as characterful, its unlikely you would see an MX5 in the same light. Relative reliability removed from the list such things as the Jensen that someone suggested and indeed all other classics pre the 90s. Vehicle reliability improved in leaps and bounds in the 90s. Great owners to chat to - you will find that with most other enthusiast marques. The ARP4 is a sports car so a family saloon of the big Jag sort wont substitute. Only things I can think of to fit your criteria that arent Morgan are Porker and Lotus. The likes of Merc SL are simply too ordinary. Or you could always go Ferrari for a 348 or 360. Mechanically pretty reliable . My vote would be Evora is you can tolerate a coupe rather than a spider.

A R107 is everything but not ordinary and a Lotus Evora is in my view…I stop it here.

A good call on a Porker Perry, however I am rather afraid that the drive would be so good that it you would have to be going at insane speeds to enjoy it. The thing I enjoyed about a Caterham and latterly the ARP4 is that you do not have to be going really fast to feel the scenery rushing by. 20 years ago I bought a new BMW M3 convertible with 338bhp and even with he hood down I found myself going far to fast for the conditions, often around the 100 mph mark, just to experience the thrill of driving. Good acceleration is obviously a must though.
Going back to Perrys' Porsche, the only one I would be really interested in would be the one you have now acquired, the Spyder, but even getting a build slot is difficult if not already a customer..........

PaulJ, I have been a fan of Porsche since the seventies, and on testing the then new 993 in the nineties as the owner of a ten year old 911SC, the degree of reduction in driver input at "normal" B road speeds came as somewhat of a disappointment. For sure the tight feel and power of a new Porsche compared to my old and somewhat loose 911was to be expected, but it took a while for me to get over the excitement (I was much younger) of driving the new to market Porsche. The 993 was more comfortable, quieter , safer and and easier to drive, and as the result more ..err..insular, I thought it had become more of a GT than the Sports car I had known the 911 to be. With power steering, servo brakes, and a whole new suspension design front and rear it had become a very different machine from my old 911, and never more so when after a day driving around the Trossachs in the 993, I jumped back into my old SC and hit the road home, down through the box into a roundabout holding it in second and accelerating out the other side and up through the box feeling attached and at home with the machine I had become so used to... Hard to beat that degree of attachment..? Had to sell the Porsche to advance with home improvement projects, and went back to m/cycling for fun, and when money was available for a fun car, remembering the way Porsche had advanced the 911`s engineering .... A +8 Morgan was for me the perfect machine when in search of a degree of driver Involvement. Any modern Porsche will be somewhat insular in comparison with a Morgan, but then even Morgans of today have become a tad insular compared with their Trad brethren , which seems to have become the desire of many maturing Morganeers, in search of softer springing more comfortable seating and even air conditioning.... HFS would perhaps spinning in his grave...(-: For sure any modern machine will have to conform with regs that Trads managed to somehow avoid for many a year, though working around the regs does increase exposure to risk, and all the fun cars listed to date and which seem to provide/require a degree of driver involvement, also seem to require the acceptance of lower levels of crash protection. The positive effect that a Morgan can have on other folk seems to engender smiles waves and finger pointing. When I owned 911`s in the "loadsamoney" years, unfortunately the effect on others was quite the opposite, though Porsches were rare cars hereabouts, whereas these days they are almost commonplace and as such perhaps that has altered by some degree..? For sure all the media hype available through You Tube etc has pushed the 911 as THE iconic "sports" car given all the usual hyperbole of auto journos harking back to heritage etc. etc. As you typed Peter, one needs to be travelling at ballistic speeds to feel anything like the "pilot" of any modern vehicle. At more normal road speeds, drivers can become almost passengers in the vehicle they are supposedly in control of.... I suspect it is all a matter of evolution which some accept gladly, whereas Luddites..? Perhaps display a degree of resistance.. (-: Addendum.... just shelled out for a nine year old 991 this Morning....
