Is the battery under the rear parcel shelf and behind the driver?
It would depend on the size of your battery tray and clamp, I was not impressed with my rusting clamp and have upgraded it.

On my 97 +4 it was behind the seat. I bought one from Halfords, 8 years later when I sold the car it was still going strong. As Rob says I would clean up the battery holder. Modern batteries of the same power can have a smaller foot print and it is possible to cut some marine ply to make a floor for smaller battery. The alternative is to measure the footprint carefully so it fits.
