While at a Tesla showroom talking to a saleslady I said I am thinking of getting a Morgan to see her reaction and it was rather positive. Her view is the issue is not the fun cars doing minimal km's on a nice Sunday drive in the country where there are lots of trees to soak up the CO2, it is the commuting cars in cities in stop start traffic that Tesla wants to replace, she felt a Tesla for weekday use and shopping on the weekend and a Morgan for a fun drive in the country was fine.

Any thoughts? How many km's are we allowed to do in a petrol before we become part of the problem? If it is fun Sunday drives then can it be more km's because we are surrounded by trees and not concrete?

If you're buying a new car, I don't think £40k is unreasonable - the carflation study shows that the average cost of buying a new car has increased by 39%, from £27,675 to £38,585. In 2011, a new car cost 131% of the UK's average annual salary, whereas today, this has increased to 150%.

Ah the effect of the PCP and higher proportion of business funded vehicles in the UK makes it a funny market.
Renault also addressed this with the battery rental scheme but this did not seem to take off, it would have reduced the cost gap quite well.

The argument regarding terrace housing is nonsense, you don't currently have a petrol pump so why would you have a charger. There is a compromise with EV it takes a bit longer to fill up and you have to get used to that if you want one.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers being taught at school that an ice age was imminent, which in part will come true for the UK if the warming Gulf Stream influence wanes. Whilst the tales of complete environmental collapse may never truly arise, most of us will have noticed the difference being experience in our local weather patterns, This July had some of the warmest days since the record warmest days in 2006 and 2014, we certainly experienced a 6c increase for most days over the last highs, which is not insignificant. The days are also very much wetter, we se more rainy/overcast days than in the past, it evidenced by the increase in moss that covers our pathways and roofs not burning off as it used to in the summer.

The bit I struggle with if simply put carbon release is the bane of our climate, then why aren't we doing more (akin to Norway's proposal) of putting in infrastructure to capture it/scrub it from our environment and lock it away in the old oil fields/coal mines. Have large scrubbers (linked to a small nuclear reactor) effectively cleaning the air of carbon, base them on old coal mines site or pump out to abandoned oil fields and lock away the carbon.........might be more cost effective that the current trend of reinventing the wheel and throwing existing infrastructure away. Means that you might over time be able to balance the carbon content to maximise the economy and food production.....or is it me?

I think when all EV's have a comparable range and charging network of the Tesla, you're absolutely correct. Pop out and charge somewere for 30 mins a week, and get 350+ hassle free miles. It's what I do with my car (albeit in takes a couple of minutes, so I do it on the way to work once ever 7 days).

However, if you have one of the more affordable EV's with a sub 100 mile range and no fastcharging it would currently be a right ballache to try and fnd a charge every day. One of the reasons I stopped commuting on the bike was having to refill every two days

However, as Guy said, in a couple of years there'll possibly be the infrastructure in place - work carparks will have chargers (we have three carparks at work, and zero chargers), public carparks will have chargers (hopefully with 'short stay' regulations to prevent them being blocked all day), and there'll be the equivalent of Petrol stations with huge banks of chargers (currently if I'm third in line for a petrol pump, Im still done in under 10 minutes - if I've got to wait for each to have a 30 minute charge, thats a big chunk of time gone).

So I'll stand by my comment that the average man on the street can't afford a Tesla.
