I guess the main disadvantage of fitting an isolator is that the ecu loses it’s memory each time? I recall some years ago when I disconnected my battery, on restarting, the engine sounded pretty rough for the first 10 seconds or so.

My Plus 8 seems unchanged with the interruption of power to the ECU, I can kid myself that the start up tick over is marginally higher but it's only when the engine and ambient is cooler really.
Interesting to read of your findings though on a different and more modern engine.

Mine was quite rattly, as if the timing wasn’t right. Since then, I have always connected a spare battery in parallel before disconnecting the main one.

Interesting, a friend of mine was advised to do just the same when he changed his MINI one but was given no reason why. Your experience would have put me off too.

With my previous Morgan Roadsters, the battery switch was important because the battery was completely drained after 12 days. Unfortunately, I had to drive about 100 km before the engine felt lively and willing again.
The 4/4 also has a battery switch but it would not be so necessary and I hardly use it because the battery started even after months. Here the effect of learning after interrupted power in the ECU is also present but not as noticeable as in the Roadster.

My S1 Roadster experience is quite different. I don't use the conditioner continuously, just every few weeks. A battery change at 13 years didn't seem to affect performance at all, and it will hold charge, certainly in summer for at least 3 months.

Whereas my Plus 4 loses charge after a week or so, which means I use the conditioner more often.

My Golf which sits outside and may not run for 3 months in winter holds charge for months.

My S1 did not have a battery switch, but with S2 and S3 I noticed the difference after power interruption.

Possibly to not lose the radio code?
