It's not unusual for more static play on drivers side rebound spring Perry, especially if car is driven mainly solo, and due to main spring sag.

It needs to be avoided on either side though to avoid excess rebound suspension movement which equates to less comfortable ride and excessive roll.

I don't think you can blaim the garage who replaced king pins for this condition although maybe they could have made you aware. Cures are new spring set, shims or best of all the SSL RS front kit which is fully adjustable and so can compensate for spring sag over time.

With either solution the aim is to just have zero play static in rebound springs such that it does not compromise main spring rate under initial compression.

Thank you All for the input.

Would anyone happen to have a picture to share of a similar vintage 4/4 showing how your lower springs are sitting to help put my mind at ease?

I suspect all Morgans will vary in respect of static rebound play Perry. Although rebound play is not desirable, worse is having static rebound spring pre-load. In this case the two springs are working against each other initially until suspension compression parts them. This situation causes the spring rates to be initially added as suspension compresses giving a very high spring rate dropping suddenly to a lower one. Exactly the opposite from ideal. See here.

When measuring the static spring situation its difficult to achieve a consistent position even with dampers removed. Simon's mention of lowering each tyre onto two sliding sheets of ally (maybe greased) sounds good though.

I suspect your spring setup was no different before kingpins were replaced and it's only the recent work which has caused you awareness. FWIW I recently checked and found a consistent 10mm of play on drivers side rebound spring. Having SSL kit I was able to adjust main springs to zero this. This gave a noticeable improvement of ride over bumpy roads and less rattles.

I've thrown in the towel in trying to figure out where this oily deposit is coming from. It is consistent in appearing only after a drive. When I got under to ensure any extra grease was cleaned away I did notice something that seems odd to me. The king pins were replaced so I assume the whole assembly is dismantled. I've found significant traces of the red grease I normally use along with clear grease that was used to grease the nipples. Logic for me would dictate any old stuff would be gone and frankly, it would be a ton cleaner under there than it is.

Sounding like a defeatist but truly disliking my car since getting it back from Oakmere. Never have I had to keep mopping up my garage floor both front and rear of the car, zero confidence in what actually was completed etc. Let alone the centre locks being so tight it took 20 mins of hammering away to get just one off!

Apologies for the rant. Just massively frustrated in having a car sitting in the garage and not having much confidence in it takes its toll.

What's changed since it was at Oakmere?

Perry, some good info from others on the rebound spring gap, how flat was the surface / garage floor where the Mog was parked to take the photo

Unless the Mog is parked on an absolutely laser flat floor you will get differing gaps above the rebound springs

It's been just over a month since going in for full service and was then informed it needed king pins, rear brake cylinders and had a brake fluid flush while at it.

* I assume they sprayed the rear springs as I have copious amounts of sticky oil being left each time I park up. I know this is normal for a day or two but not after 6 plus weeks.
* The reason for this post - something leaking at the front. Zero leaks or issues before bringing in
* I appreciate the pins need bedding in but the front is bobbing along worse than when new. Fingers cross it settles
* while not mechanical, I left there being made to feel like I'm new at Morgan, or better yet never owned a car. I always bring my car in freshly washed and polished and asked they do not wash it. I got it back where clearly someone took a dirty wet rag and wiped the whole car down. The explanation I was given was they had to wipe the washer fluid off after testing said washer. ???? Last I checked that doesn't require them touching the whole body
* I got in the car to leave and the car was rolled...hand brake on. I yanked it back as far as it would go and I could still push it. In it went again and clearly something was up as they had it on the hoist for a good 10 mins with the wheels off. Last I checked, you can adjust the cable in a few mins.

When you pay just shy of £2000 you would expect the car to come back better than when left.

I should say, the lady who dealt with my booking, greeted me etc could not have been nicer. Top marks in that regards.

That is not impressive from a large garage, the fact they spoke down to you is unforgivable really particularly as they were proven incompetent over the handbrake issue.

I'm sorry you have had this bad experience so lets hope they read this and rectify the situation for you pdq, they are subscribers on TM as I'm sure you know.
