In all times I've moved my personal registration I have never had a request from the DVLA to inspect either car, although I accept for a car that has possibly never been MOT'd they might smell a rat....

I don’t think you need the MOT anymore, that used to be the case but the rules have since changed.

I posted the link to the rules earlier. If the car has been off the road for more than 5 years it will need an MOT and an inspection before the registration can be transferred from it. I have a friend who has just completed this process.

Surely all the running gear will end up in a Bentley special somewhere...

Thanks for posting that link Ian, that ruling makes the vendor look a little economic with the truth.

I thought cars over 40years old didn’t require an MOT, seems daft to insist on one just to remove the registration number if it hasn’t been required for long enough.
Well, not entirely daft, the DVLA will automatically inherit the registration and sell it at action for the full value I suppose.

I'm not sure if the vendor is being untruthful or is just unaware of the rules. I see he has the registration on sale...

Presumably it's on a retention certificate. Maybe it was taken off the shed Bentley years ago and used on something else.

I think there are strange games played in the selling of registration numbers. I have a "COB" registration on my AC Cobra and if I look at a large number of registration sale sites, a good number of them show that my number is for sale. Which it isn't.

I assume if anyone showed an interest in my registration the dealer would be on the phone trying to buy it from me. If I had more time, I should try and buy my registration and see what happens.

As has been said on another thread related to footballers cars, often number plates are copies but worn illegally as the fines are punitive for such transgressions.
