It looks like Morgan was using the same rubber material even on their "improved" version.......Probably recycled army boots and rubber dolls?? :-)

I hope this helps. There is no plain unthreaded surface on the sides to allow an O ring seal, as with the early dipstick type caps. Not ideal but if you inspect and replace the seal occasionally it should be fine, as long as the large penny washer is there to retain it.

Another good reason to install an oil pressure / temperature gauge. The SPA version from Merlin Motorsports outlined in MTWC article works well for me.

I agree with Cuna 2016, the SPA gauge works very well, gives peace of mind and can be mounted in such a way that it is not obtrusive but visible.

I have just checked mine and I have the large rubber seal with a hole in it in the cap but no nut or washer holding it in place and no hole in the cap for a bolt, is this normal?

Sounds normal, and like you have an original cap with a new gasket, but the hole was never drilled in the cap to put the nut/bolt/washer in.

Check out this cap for what yours should look like after you've modified it. [Planenut's photo I think.]

This is a clever idea - increased bearing surface for the rubber combined with the appropriate sized penny washer.
