I too love the clean lines of the small sportscar that was the 911 when I was younger. Had a rusty 912 that was equally beguiling but that went for a 911 or three in the mid seventies when AFN isleworth was the only place could service them. I loved the interior then too... uncluttered.

Ditto Nick. I had a 1968 911S and probably no less rusty under the shiny metallic green exterior. Remember buying a set of barrels and pistons at an AFN clearout sale.

Did my own servicing and had close to 50,000 miles of trouble free motoring barring a broken clutch cable. Did farm out to the Porche guys in Amersham to have throttle bodies and cam chain tensioners rebuilt though.

Lucky boy, it was an itch I never saw to and it won't happen now at the current market rate for one.
They just have a purity of line and functionality about them that really appeals to me, maybe that's why we graduated to Morgan's thumbs

As one who spent many a year worshipping and repairing my Lotus cars in the 60`s & 70`s thinking Porsche to be no more than souped up Beetles... Until I bought an old Beetle for family transport, and in time begun to appreciate the design and build quality and reliability... Hmm..? In time (it`s a long story) I came to own a very rusty 912, that I spent rather a long time inexpertly nailing back together, broken valve springs, cracked cylinder, but once it was finally up and running it was an impressive bit of kit, and caused me in time to seek out a "real" Porsche one with six pots and a bit more power by way of a 77 SC, that replaced with an 82SC, thus was fortunate to have sampled and greatly enjoyed air cooled Porsches from the 60`s 70`s and 80`s, before my motoring interests "matured" and a desire to experience Vintage performance motoring took hold.... Real vintage cars with abundant performance were well outside my financial capabilities however a +8 Morgan fitted that bill perfectly, and still does. Just that as I aged I found I could not enjoy it as I once was able to.

Porsches, well I had circa ten years of enjoying the marque and the company of the like-minded folk in the Porsche club. They say much in life may be cyclic, and as I aged still further, still in search of a degree of continuance of back road driving in all weathers, a tin top sports car seemed to be the logical answer, and my fondness of Porsche made it top of the list, though £40-£60k for an air cooled 911 the likes of which I had spent a whole lot of time welding back together over thirty years ago.. adding another 30 years of corrosion opportunities and seldom used old engines engines.....Hmm..? Struggled for circa two years with logic vs numbers, before deciding to give water-cooled a go, only recently got back into Porsche ownership, still fantastic machines, but in truth I suspect for "A" & "B" road fun an old air cooled may still be an ideal, for those in search of driver involvement at other than ballistic speeds. Since I bought the Porsche the sun has shone and the temps have been such that the Morgan has been more used than the Porsche.. laugh2

As for what might lie below gleaming air cooled Porsche paintwork...

Scenic run home from near Barnard Castle today. The perfect end to a week’s touring - 530 miles in a week and hood down for every mile.

Back in the mists of time one of these (piloted by one of its originators I think) turned up on a demo visit to the Bedford Eagle MC one club night .... very advanced for the time but didn't really shift us old Rockers off our Triumphs and Beezas 🙂

With the usual suspects to the White Horse in Lower Ufford which by the way has a small car show on Saturday. Despite no rain forecast we got wet in Wickham Market where we met.

With some seriously dodgy navigation going on by the co leadership of two of our company, both as we left the coffee stop and on the A12 I arrived first having been the last out of Wickham Market & losing them in Saxmundham.

This old world pub has cask beers served from a table. The Woodfords Wherry was very palatable. The car is now home & ready for the service & MOT on Thursday.

That looks a good day out John despite the weather.

On the Countryside Alliance site the other day I noticed that the small butchers in Lavenham had received an accolade from them so might be worth popping in next time you are that way.
An impressive range of pies on display wink
