my '95 plus 8 has this socket which i am assuming is for a trickle charger to be plugged in, but searching google last night i couldn't find the answer.

can anyone enlighten me please? pic of the socket is in the link below.

Just looks like a power socket to me, try plugging in a Sat nav or similar and see if it powers up. Probably fitted to take a battery conditioner rather than a charger as they come with that type of accessory plug.

its much smaller than a cigarette lighter, thats what has confused me, plus there is a cigarette lighter in the glove box.

Gavin, are you sure it is not for a electric cut off switch. looks very like one I had on a MGB.

That's what it looks like to me, lift the saddle board and see what's behind it and if it looks like this that is it. If not you need precise dimensions of the socket to tie up with a charger plug..
I have had one on all my Morgan's and throw the switch every time I leave it that way you never need a battery charger and the best imobiliser ever.

The two Plus 8's came fitted and I fitted one to the 4/4 Sport, great anti theft devices, just turn the red key remove and go.

If it's just the key missing you can buy these separately, be careful though as I know of two different types.

Pretty sure it's a 'Hella' style 12V accessory port.

Wiki explanation

My BMW K75 had a couple. You can buy an adaptor to you can use cigarette lighter style plugs.

I've read that the Hella is the better outlet as it was designed to be an outlet from the start, whereas the cigarette lighter style was repurposed to make it into power outlet.

definitely not an isolating switch socket as i have one of those to.

i think TBM may have it correct, looks like a Hella port.

This is the standard electrical cut-off switch . As Richard has said above it is normally fitted with a red key that you can remove as an antitheft device.

Presuming the car still works OK without the red key , I suspect someone has lost a key at some point and by-passed the wiring.

I thought at first it was a cigarette lighter type socket , I installed one and use it for my SatNav, but as per TBM there are now better options for that.

If it's got a +ve and -ve feed, it's an accessory socket. It they're both +ve it'll be a cut off.

If it has nothing, it's been bypassed smile
