I had my MOG converted about 15 years ago. It's the best thing I ever did. I remember speaking to a friend of my Dads who at the time was a "boffin" with the MOD. He worked it out how long it would take to pay back the outlay of the cost of the work to replace it. Of course he was working on the fuel prices of 2003! And of course the car drives so much better.

Rev reduction was the main reason for the conversion - to make for a more relaxed drive. However, if I get an extra 3mpg I reckon in about 5 1/2 years it will have paid for itself (@8000 a year)

TBM .... where was the 90° speedo drive from? .... the one issue I still have to resolve with the running gear on mine is that.

Will be using one of the GPS speedos off ebay backed up by marking the rev counter as a temporary stopgap if it's not resolved before the thing is roadworthy.

Cheers TBM ..... but wasn't that thread about your 4 speed box (or am I getting the wrong end of the stick again?) .... my car has the type 9, 5 speed box like your new one (pictured with a spiffing looking 90° drive) .... is the drive the same? As my cable seems to fit down inside the recess of the drive (I guess to be held by some sort of circlip) and neither end of the Speedograph unit linked look like they'd fit my box or existing cable

Ah yes - Simon made a special adaptor to mate the old angle drive to the new box. Drop him a line and he may be able to sort you out.

Went over this afternoon and picked the old girl up.

As well as the gearbox conversion I also had a lighter flywheel (5.9kg compared to 9.9kg original) put in, and a quickshift fitted.

Gears took a bit of getting used to as the gate is very tight. To begin with I had lots of missed/wrong gears, but about halfway through the journey I started to get the hang of it, and she loosened up a bit so was getting the right gear every time.

The 5th gear is great - at 3400rpm I'm now hitting 80mph as opposed to 65mph (GPS Speed). With the lighter flywheel she spins up much faster, but still idles nicely and handles traffic well (Northampton was crawling speed through roadworks and traffic lights). Could easily pull away from about 20mph in 5th.

Very happy with all the work that's been done, and the resulting improvements on performance and drivability (Big thank you to Simon).

Only issue is the speedo - she's now over-reading by about 40% rather than 10%! Hopefully we may be able sort it with speedo drive changes or worst case, a speedo recalibration.
