A couple of years after ownership, found that the locking cap on my plus 4 was getting tight. Now, I simply give the petrol side of it a good squirt of silicon spray once a year and it works a treat.

I think the purpose of the cap is to provide some negative pressure in the tank, to contain fumes? And also in the unlikely event of turning over, to contain the fuel.

Try spraying as much of the mechanism as you can with a lubricating spray. WD40 or similar. Test it off the car.

They all seem to be stiff and it feels like its turning on a seal. But adding lube should fix it.^^

If you decide to remove the keyed gas cap, just make sure the screw holding the gasket, washer and spring on the flip up cap is tight. I went to fuel up and when I popped the cap, I found the screw, washer, gasket and spring loose and on top of the keyed cap. I should probably put a little lock tight on it.

John Excellent suggestion.

I had the problem recently. I contacted Morgan and was quoted £170 for the whole assembly, part no 3FL501. I couldn't buy the insert alone from them. I then found my spare unused key was fine, it held locked inside the insert. I contacted Newton equipment, who make the insert and found they sell pairs of spare keys marked 044. My originals are marked 044, which it appears they all are. I ordered a pair and they work fine, so now I have 3 good ones... https://shop.newton-equipment.com/products/spare-keys-for-zero-range-aa-ac-8?variant=40649837150396

but another guy after fiddling and wiggling the gas cap, eventually got it to relock and could remove the cap. Since that time I've simply left the interior cap out, and relied on the outer seal to retain my gas.

Just call me the fiddler/wiggler Yes, Andrew, you certainly saved me a lot of tear down and rebuild work. I often take the hard road when a simpler solution may be at hand.
