Geomagnetic Disturbance Alert
30th Sep 2021
British Geological Survey

A coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with a long-lasting solar flare was observed leaving the Sun on the 28th of September. The Earth-directed parts of this CME are predicted to arrive late afternoon on the 30th September.

Enhanced geomagnetic activity is expected on impact, with STORM conditions likely, depending on the configuration of the magnetic field embedded in the CME.

Assuming clear dark skies, and that the geomagnetic field is suitably disturbed, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora. In the UK, those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland may have the best opportunities.

Cheers Graham .... wall to wall cloud here today (after some lovely weather at the weekend is's come over all 'November') .... but the forecast claims we may get some clear skies from 10pm onwards for a few hours ... will keep an eye out.

As with Keith, I also thank you for the forecast, skies are beginning to clear here, I might jump in the jeep and head for darkness later for a look.

There was some action earlier tonight ... vertical bars of light as the cloud cleared .... as of now (11.30 pm) it's not come to anything .... we're still 3-4 years from the maximum of the cycle but with the darker nights on us I'm expecting to start seeing them stronger and more regularly.

Looking qt my friend's posts on FB this morning there was a good display last night .... posted by people on the coast ... houses by the sea on this coast face north and often have big windows that way for the view so they notice them starting .... traditional country houses are built with their backs to the north wind with few north facing windows so we have to go and stand out in the cold to check .... means we miss them much more often .... annoyed to have just seen them warming up but missed the main show this time! frown

I went to the beach, Keith, stayed from around 10 till near 11, didn’t see even a glimmer, the stars were nice though. I’d have stayed a bit longer but a couple of other cars turned up and I realised, I’m a weirdo!
